One of our small pre-Covid pleasures was to sit on the terrace and track planes on the FlightRadar24 app. We would have one going almost directly overhead, but 20,000 to 30,000’ up, about once every hour. Planes 5 to 15 miles east or west were seen about every 15 minutes.
Since Covid that frequency has probably fallen tenfold, though the weather this summer has rarely been conducive to sitting out.
We get Chinooks flying directly over us quite low - the flight path from RAF Benson to RAF Woodvale goes above our house... now them things are loud...and you certainly know they're coming.
45 minutes of silence! You wouldn’t like it here, the silence is so loud, it’s deafening. we imagine noises in the silence. It’s like living in a padded room.
I think I would love it. I have tinnitus so rarely get total silence. Always something to listen to!
You would love it, it’s deadly silent here at the moment, although we do get the odd super fast jet flying over but they’ve gone so quickly we don’t even see what direction they come from, not often though.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
Life is too short @Fire. In your situation I'd be seriously exploring alternative living arrangements.
I think we get the occasional plane leaving a trail but can't remember seeing one for ages. Certainly nothing you can hear. We do get the occasional low-flying helicopter but it is infrequent enough to make it exciting rather than tedious - get tha' sen oop north where folk stand, stare and point when they see one of those metal birds in't sky
Pretty quiet here too. We are only a couple of miles (as the plane flies) from the grandly named Gloucestershire Airport, but it's pretty rare for anything with more than one propeller to take off from there. We do sometimes see and hear aircraft en-route to Fairford when the big show is on, but those are a welcome addition to the air rather than a problem.
Fire, just been reading back through this thread. It really does sound as if you need to get away from London. Will you be able to make any progress on this? we are in East Devon ( originally London, via Bath) and find it very peaceful here. Our village is only about 6 miles from Exeter Airport, and noticeably quieter since Covid, and the collapse of Flybe. Doesn’t bother us as we are both aircraft enthusiasts, but the flight paths are fairly well defined and fairly easy to avoid buying a home underneath one. The rest of the time, there is very little traffic noise, just the regular whine of chainsaws!
