When people stay with us,they say,"omg,it's so quiet and so dark" my youngest stayed a couple of days ( and nights) last week, said she can't wake up here. She woke up gone 10 am. There is a street light out the front, past our room, but nothing out the back
Taking bookings for B &B. We can both only sleep in total silence, not so much as a ticking clock. My oldest son says if you drop a pin on the grass I wake up
Lincolnshire is quite quiet and dark…we mostly tend to get only the odd RAF plane…and while they can be noisy they do tend to be flying a bit faster than the average airliner so any noise doesn’t last long!
I'm glad it's been a bit better for you recently Fire.
Our fairly noisy area seems to be back to pre-covid levels more or less, with the exception of international flights. We are 15mins from Gatwick, a few miles from both the m25 and m23 (when I think it's silent I realise I can actually hear the low drone of these). We back onto the Brighton mainline (and Gatwick express) with trains thundering past every few minutes and are under the 'flight path' of the local aerodrome with several light aircraft each hour in daylight. I love where I live but a lack of quiet can be... draining. As much as anything else it's the constant interruption when you want to try to tune in to the rustle of the leaves and the birdsong. I can tolerate it in the background of other busyness, but when I'm in need of some peace it's not to be found in East Surrey.
Fire, after what you’ve been used to, living not too far from a motorway or smaller airport will seem very quiet in comparison. As long as you aren’t directly under the approach or take off flightpaths, it can be relatively peaceful. The planes tend to be much smaller too, no 747 or A380s away from the major hubs. I don’t really register the daytime planes, but when we first moved here, I would sometimes get woken by the Mail plane taking off at 12.30am. Now I don’t even hear it, or on its return around 3am. We can often see the lights of aircraft coming into Exeter when the leaves are off the trees, but don’t actually hear them. So hopefully, you won’t have to completely discount large areas of the country to find enough improvement over your current location.
I remember visiting a relative’s house in South London, and visiting the loo. Nice bright bathroom with big windows, no curtains or blinds as seemingly not overlooked, just a view out to a low brick wall. Imagine my horror when I heard the sound, very loud, of an approaching Tube train! I didn’t know whether to quickly try and pull my pants up, or just hope no one was looking out in my direction. As it happened, the sound roared by, but the train must have been below the level of the wall. ( I was quite young then, these days I’d have stayed put in comfort, and probably waved at the passengers!)
We're roughly half an hour from Glasgow and Prestwick airports. We get planes in the height of summer from Glasgow, as some of the cheapo airlines have a particular route that comes this way. Hardly notice them though. There's a little bi plane that comes over regularly which is barely noticeable and makes very little noise. That's about it. The idiots [who live here] and drive at stupid speeds to go fifty feet are a bigger problem.
I lived nearer the airport for a while and it drove me nuts. Not sure you'd like our climate though, although this summer has been more like a south of England one. I need to move further north if that's going to be a pattern
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
