Is there anywhere in Britain that isn't under a flight path?

Depends on the hill @wild edges. Nothing much to sussurate on the tops of a lot of 'em  ;)

Whispering hills - isn't that a song by those 2 from It Ain't Half Hot Mum?  :D
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Maybe you're not listening hard enough  :p  My hearing is still good enough that I can hear bats.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

    Cheeky b***er!

It's just that we have proper sized hills up here @wild edges ....not those wee impostors you have in Wales  :D

Apparently, a person can do 45 minutes max. in a complete true silence.

Mountains always have wind and generally all outdoor spaces have some background noise.

I'm with @Fairygirl on this one having hauled my weary body up lots of Scotland's hills. On the top a blissful silence, the odd birdsong or cricket/grasshopper but that's it. And the whole of the country at your feet.

An update to my howl of despair about living under a flight path:
during Covid, flights were so much reduced and that helped the noise levels a lot locally. Joyfully (in a Nimby kind of way) the flight paths seem to have been moved so planes no longer brush my roof. No more 4.30am wake up calls, no more counting 20 second flight intervals. I can't tell you what a difference it makes to me. I thought maybe I was overblowing the impact, but now that it's reduced I can see the noise was really wearing me down. Life in earplugs is no fun.

We also used to get police helicopters going over head every night, sometimes for hours. It seemed to be part of a local policing strategy. Again through Covid times this stopped. I suspect there was an outcry when people were at home all the time and were thinking more about air space. They started noticing and discussing how nuts and how loud it was. They put petitions together. The police wards were asked for data on why this (expensive) emergency measure was being used every night (possibly anti-lines drug action). Now this noise has reduced, it also makes a huge difference. Three hours of helicopters going round and round over the house from 2-5am is going to make anyone lose the plot.

Proper silence is such a blessing. I hope you have that where you live. 🌱

45 minutes of silence!   You wouldn’t like it here,  the silence is so loud, it’s deafening.
we imagine noises in the silence. It’s like living in a padded room.
