The map of rainfall probably correlates with the temperature - dry soils lead to higher air temperatures.
What's interesting to me is the extent of the over 39 - zone. We'd never had temps in the UK above 39 before and there's a huge chunk of the country suddenly gone over it this year

An interesting article on collapse of bird and insect numbers due to drought.
Here at Knepp the scientists are saying insect numbers are well down - moths, dragonflies, butterflies. The earth is too dry to forage or pupate in. Bumble bees overheat.
There have been big fires in wilded areas, wetlands are drying up. Let’s hope for a wet winter.

It's a shame we can't magically pull out what we don't want from there, I know everything has it's use, but i'll be glad if mosquito and midge numbers are down.
Since yesterday, August 2nd, like most of my Département, I am now in a total watering ban for ornamental gardens. Since there is no rain forecasted for the rest of the month, I'm wondering what is going to happen to my mixed borders. This morning I took a number of photos of the garden, in order to document the effects of dryness in the coming weeks.
