Water Situation Report

  • We had 6" of rain last week, so off to a good start here at least. All the waterways which had been slow or dry since June picked up a lot of flow. More due at the weekend if the forecast is correct.

We had a total of 16mm here last week, a bit over half an inch, which is just a bit less than long-term average for a week in October. Rain-bearing clouds from the west drop most of it on those pesky pennines for @MikeOxgreen ;)
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

Haha, it does benefit you though! Many reservoirs are linked these days and The Don starts in the Pennines, west of Dunford Bridge.
So you've got the best of both worlds (unless you need rain?) of less rain, but the results of it.  :)

I can't remember ever wishing for less rain (although I might occasionally wish for it to come at a more convenient time :D ). Sandy free-draining soil means the garden could always do with more.

I spoke too soon. The streams have stopped flowing again. It must be very borderline as everything is very damp up here.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

We did have a couple of decent showers about 3 weeks ago but, for the last fortnight, it's just been the (very) occasional (very) short, light shower and everything is dry as heck again.

The back lawn is finally green again (with patches). It actually needed a haircut about 2 weeks ago - the first proper cut since April / May. However, I think the greening and growth is almost entirely down to autumnal condensation as it's been quite chilly on a few nights and we've had some heavy early morning dews.

Had 3 burly chaps round yesterday putting in replacement fence posts. Took them much longer than they anticipated because they were all really struggling to dig  post holes in the rock hard, compacted clay soil.
Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down
  • We had eventually 4 inches of rain recently. I have collected 40l for the 200l tank from the greenhouse. More rain to come next week.

    I my garden.

    ..
Plenty of heavy rain here in sunny Gloucester, especially over night on two occasions, woke me up beating off the window, when I looked it was running down the road!
Water butt on the garden shed had been filled up,though I used half to water the borders to get them back to normal!
