Bio , thanks for update , weather has been great for October so far The tidying up has started well , used tomatoes & cucumber compost from g/h now on beds at allotment for over wintering Emptied one of my compost bins and dug it in for garlic 🧄 & shallot planting in due course Next big jobs at allotment , sorting out a strawberry 🍓 and summer raspberry bed Asparagus only just starting to turn brown , so will leave it a bit longer before cutting down and composting For some reason onions are going off already , not happened before
Yes my onions have gone soft as well. Think it must be humidity. The cats seem to have come to some arrangement whilst we were away last week-end Tommy allowed on bed by Boots thé Bengal..that's à first! Neighbours have moved so no dogs next door. Peace reigns.
Hi Everyone Not much to do before the end of the month which is probably lucky as I have heavy chest cold so a bit peeky. 26/27th October Flower Days cut down Dahlias and Cannas if they have finished flowering. Lift dry and store. I shall leave mine in the ground as we don't really have cold Winters here.On 28th start blanching Chicory and finish blanching Celery. Lift last of Celeriac ..voles are keen on roots as I have found to my cost..had 4 edible roots out of 6 so not too bad and flavour superb. Tried first Blue Butternut Squash roasted yesterday. Courgette green outer and glorious rich gold inner and so sweet. Picked 7 from 2 plants so delighted. Butternut squash Curry tonight! Lots of spices to drive away the bugs. Biodynamic Calender says soak Broad Beans in Camo Ile r Oak Bark bath for 15mins before sowing. Stops seed rotting apparently. Going to try it. Any new plans for planting this Autumn?? Looking forward to Fruit Trees coming out for sale..on the hunt for a Quince. Happy Gardening.
Welcome to November! And what a mixed bag it is already..Sun/Rain/Sun but joy of joys warm. It's Bank Holiday today and if the ground wasn't so sodden I would have planted out the rest of my Garlic . The Broad Beans are still doing well and the Forty Day Peas are podding up in the polytunnel. The Weather Prediction for November is wet and windy I'm afraid with colder spells in the North and East. The 6th-10th will be warmer again but very damp A drier spell should come between the 21st to 28th but cold winds are forecast with this. Not too good then!!1st-3rd November shows Moon descending in front of Virgo so Root Days. If you are dry enough plant Shallots Onions and Garlic. A New Moon is at 9.14pm on the 4th. A Flower Day running into the 5th means clear away the balance of spent flowers apart from grasses and treat roses for Blackspot in this damper weather. Try to avoid gardening after 5.10pm on the 5th as Moon perigee. (don't think you will be with the clocks changed!!) 6th and 7th are Leaf Days. There is a noeud descending on the 6th so avoid gardening before 8.45am. Start forcing Chicory and Plant out Cabbages down 25/26th August. Pop in hedging plants and shrubs whilst ground still warm. 8th and 9th are Fruit Days. N milder areas sow some Broad Beans and round as opposed to wrinkled peas. Sun shining again..off outside for a tidy up. Happy Gardening 😊
Haven't seen shallots or garlic on sale here in the usual SM yet but have also been avoiding plant shops as I still have bulbs to plant and I've been very busy with 2 lots of house guests and then the patch club and gardening club.
I don't usually do garlic and broad beans till late November/early December anyway as I need to wait for the ground to be moist enough.
I have tho sown seeds (shrubs, trees and perennials) in cell trays on shelves in the polytunnel along with the baby cavolo nero and PSB, all protected covered with a clear, zipped plastic jacket to keep those chooks off on wet days when they head for the tunnel.
Heavy showers between sunny spells here and loads to catch up on indoors.

Hello Bio thanks for update - weather , well yesterday morning we had a rain storm , afternoon the sun was shining in blue sky's . Today when the wind drops it’s raining , looks like a very difficult gardening month at allotment However , only 1 lot of garlic left to plant plus broad beans & spring onions with these going under clouches Really need to sort out Rasberrys , summer & autumn , plus start a new strawberry bed
Can’t make my mind up wether to bubble rap green house or not
Hi Everyone Bank Holiday here yesterday so after 11am mini ceremony at village memorial followed by mulled wine and nibbles in the village hall..set to in the garden with a vengeance. Planted Crab Apple and cut down Sweetcorn. Cleared old Aubergines and Peppers out of greenhouse leaving one of each behind as have been told they resprout if you leave them. No idea if this is true but worth a go. Reading Monty Don 'Nigel'.. lovely book. Interesting to read how Longmeadow was designed and developed. New Quince Tree looks happy and 6.99euro Plums thriving!!! Under cloud of going back into hospital again next week for a few days as bloods gone AWOL!! Will rush round garden this weekend finishing off jobs before Winter sets in. Still picking blackberries which is odd for November. Tidied up hedgerow, just need to rewrite labels for Hostas and Peonies before they disappear back into the ground and I forget where they are. Wild roses flowering again. Daffodils peaking through in pots. 12/13th are Flower Days. Pop in some perennial sweet peas against a trellis. If you have just turned the central heating on, remember to keep the air humid around indoor plants with a 'mister' and wipe leaves regularly with a damp cloth. 14/15/16th November Sees Moon ascending in Pisces so Leaf Days. Harvest Brussels and Salad Crops. Pick leaves from Beetroot / Carrot and Chard for tasty salads. (I have left alot of my beetroot in as so mild and even if roots go woody the leaves are fabulous in salads plus add welcome colour) 17/18th November are Fruit Days ..in mild areas sow some round as opposed to wrinkled peas and mangetout. I think I might try some more in the Polytunnel as opposed to outside. Delighted with 40 Day Peas. 19/20/21st November Full Moon on 19th at 1.25am plus there is an Eclipse of the Moon followed by a descending noeud so no gardening recommended on 19th. However make the most of the 20th as Root Days again. Sow some Radishes and short stem Carrots under cover. On 21st gardening not recommended before 7.20am as Moon apogee. 22/23/24th Flower Days again if no frost plant Bare Root Shrubs and Roses. Pop in Wisteria and Clematis. Protect Artichokes. Well I think that will keep us all busy☺️☺️ Pulled my Parsnips last Sunday 1root survived out of the 6.. only the leaves of the others came out with a munched up crusty top attached VOLES!!! Cats under strict instructions not to lie indoors snoozing but to get out there and do some Cat Work!! The one root that survived was delicious so I shall persevere again next year. Also just a big thank you to Obelixx for recommending Chiltern Seeds..the Italian Peppers and Farmers Long Aubergine are just so tasty. Shan't buy shop ones again. Happy Gardening!
Hears an interesting problem , last Monday at allotment , I pulled some carrots 🥕 and they had been eaten from the middle down wards ( if that makes sense) and I couldn’t see any mice or rat holes Currently with family in Swindon , o/h making Christmas wreaths & table decorations with sister & nieces
So much for a few days in hospital..went in 15th November came out 26th!! Thank goodness for all the gardenng magazines people had lent me. Even the nurses bought me some gardening books to look at which was a joy. I ordered Shallots.Snowball white onions which I pull as Spring Onions and Senshyu Onions on the Internet. Imagine m joy when I got home to find the parcel had already arrived. Now I have to be honest and say regardless bf the Moon I rushed straight outside and planted the Elephant Garlic and Senshyu Onions having lifted the Broad Beans. S lucky with the weather just caught a mild sunny couple of hours😊😊 The Lunar Weather Calendar talks of the strong possibility of snow from 25th December to the end of the month. The beginning of the month will be wet slightly milder but from 8th -18th strong cold winds come in and whilst dry 19th -24th the winds will prevail. On strike tomorrow it's my Birthday..so glad to be home for it.. nearly wasn't ☹️☹️ Will give details of what to do in the garden Thursday. Happy Gardening!
