Hi Everyone Sad to see leaves beginning to fall from wild cherries and silver birch. Whilst I love Autumn the thought of cold wet winter days..(Dry frosty ones don't seem to exist now) is disheartening. Australian friend is just off to first Spring Garden Fair! Wish we could turn the clock back!! Still Chelsea looks hopeful and as many designers have said it will make a change to use different plant schemes and colours. 14/15t/16th September are Fruit Days with ascending Moon in front of Sagittarius. Don't leave cleared beds free, but pop in a green manure as otherwise rain will leach out nutrients that you have built up. If you're not into green manure, cover with a good layer of straw to encourage worm activity. Don't pull up Bean and Pea or Courgette and Squash roots, let them disintegrate underground this releasing goodness. 17/18th September are Root Days Sow some Radishes for a catchcrop before cold weather strikes. 19th/20th September are Flower Days. Sow Sweet Peas in pots to pop out in Spring after frosts. Keep under cover throughout the Winter. 21/22/23rd September On the twenty first we have a Full Moon ..Take advantage of its energy and sow some Winter Spinach in a sunny spot. Lambs Lettuce and Winter Lettuces can be planted or sown now outside. I have hoed my flower borders and mixed up all my Tulips and Daffodils from last year so I don't know what colours they are on purpose to provide a Spring Surprise. Will by fresh planned coloured bulbs for pots. Just decided to have a change. Have you any new planting ideas planned? I have been thrilled with my efforts sowing annual flowers instead of buying plants. Will do it again next year. The Cosmos have been a joy. I have put my Biodynamic preparations in the Compost heap will be interested to see if they make any difference to my standard compost methods. Once again I would ask all Biodynamic gardeners to contribute to this Thread..I cannot be the only one surely!! Happy Gardening!😊
Hello , back of holiday from Tenby Spent morning at allotment and afternoon in garden Allotment , unfortunately rats 🐀 got the sweet corn 🌽 while away Harvested lots , including sprouts ! Never picked any this early Burnt the prunings from before hols Garden , tidied up g/h , picked tomatoes 🍅 and 3 very small cucumbers and some dead heading Collected hollyhock seeds Weather , autumn coming in fast but reasonably dry so far , lovely sunny day We had lots of frosts this year I trust you are keeping well
Happy Michaelmas! Are you celebrating? We normally have Roast Goose but too hot so Seafood Platter outside and Fizz nstead. Just tried our first sweetcorn..brilliant.. always tasted awful before as I let them go over. Froze a dozen too.
@biofreak Michaelmass , not really come across this celebration before , enjoy Had new insulated roof put on side conservatory, have been really busy with that, garden & allotment been a bit neglected, need to tidy up ready for winter Currently with family in Swindon
One of my great uncles farmed in Berkshire - if anyone complained about strange weather patterns in any year, he look skywards and say "it'll be all square be Michaelmas." 25th Sept had a sort of duel foreboding too - as it is one of the quarter days in the old English calendar and half your rent was due, many tenancies still mention Michaelmas and Lady Day - 25th March, the beginning of the New Year - 1st January wasn't adopted till 1752, quite an important year for everybody who look to the Moon and stars to organize their lives because the calendar in use had come adrift from reality so September 2nd was followed by Sept 14th and of course several people died in the riots in which the mob shouted "give us back our eleven days!"
I had heard this saying but did not know the rest of your info..found it fascinating. Thank you..we need lots more input like this. Just got back from Festival of 1001 vegetables..really great Bio Fair. Stayed in nice Chambre d'Hote with an amazing 2 acre garden full of topiary. A model half size working windmill which created energy for the fountain in a lovely pond full of Koi fish and surrounded by a Rockery with really interesting plants. On the banks of the pond opposite the windmill was a model half size cottage which lent itself to imagining the Hobbit popping out. The grounds contained 2 gites and staggered terraces with exquisite planting. Lovely Parisian couple owned the place. He used to be a pattisier to the French President and organised Embassy teas etc...all very grand. He retired 15yrs ago and constructed the model buildings in the garden using real stone etc (looked just like Chelsea Flower Show) Apparently he had always wanted to be a builder not a Pattisier!! En route back home bought new cover for polytunnel. Looks as though we had storms over the weekend. Sunflowers and Sweetcorn flattened plus buckets and bins all over the place. We had 23c at the w/e...Off to Crazy Nettle Fair next weekend then Chateau d'Orcher Garden Fair at Le Havre. Must get outside and sort out garden after storms whilst sun is shining. 28/29/30th September are Flower Days so plant Spring Bulbs Shrubs and Perrenials. Remembering to water them in well if dry with you. Happy Gardening 😊
Hi Everyone Welcome home GWRS! I'm afraid you'll have your work cut out this weekend. The Lunar Weather Forecast predicts wet and very windy from 1st-5th October. Certainly wet here this morning with brisk wind supposed to strengthen over w/e and we are outside on Sunday at the Crazy Nettle Fair..Oh Joy ☹️☹️☹️ From 6th-10th the weather will be calmer and warm but still some wet spells. 11th-15th chillier and wind. 16th-20th warmer but damp. 21st -28th drier but tendancy to remain windy in the north. 29th-31st autumnal and cooler. Well the tomatoes have finished but I am going to try our first aubergines tonight (both of them!) ,We have been picking Telegraph Peas and the 40 Day Pea is doing well. Broad Beans are podding up nicely. All in all delighted with returns this year. The Lunar Calender says plant Shallots 1/2/3rd October. I did this last year and they all rotted as such a wet Winter. I suppose I could grow them in the greenhouse..What would you do? Plant Garlic now as well (Now this worked for me last Autumn ..best crop ever. As Root Days start to harvest Horseradish. Leeks and Parsnip plus Scorzonera and Jerusalem Artichokes if they have finished flowering. 4th October is a strange cross over day between Roots and Flowers. Content yourself with dead heading spent flowers and tidying beds as Moon perigee on 5th after 5.10pm so not much to gain. 6th-7th October sees Moon descending in front of Sagittarius so Fruit Days. Sow Broad Beans in mild areas and Round as opposed to Wrinkled Peas. I shan't bother with the peas this late but my Autumn sowing of Broad Beans did work out well although I chose a very sheltered spot and added some extra sand to the Raised Bed for extra drainage. So think of me being blown away and drenched on Sunday ..nice hotel planned for tomorrow night though at Pont Audemer. Happy Gardening!
Aaaah! Before you write in I have just spotted tbat I gave you Lunar Calender for first few days in November not October!!! Please ignore. Opened at wrong page on Calender! Weather correct though. 2/3/4th October are Fruit Days. Plant out the last Strawberries and other Bush Fruit to benefit from the warm ground. Start thinking where you want a new Raspberry Bed and pop in stakes and wires. Dig plant holes for Fruit Trees to be planted out in November. 5/6/7th October New Moon on the 6th. Root Days. Plant out Onions down 20-21st August in unmanured ground. Don't forget to cut roots back to 1cm from the bulb to encourage new strong growth. I know some of you cannot see the point of this but it does work. Lift Chicory for storage and blanching. Pop in some Shallots in sheltered well drained position covering with old not fresh compost. So sorry for error..even I wondered whilst writing yesterday if message was correct! Have a good weekend 😊😊
Hi Everyone Do hope you had the same wonderful warm weather as us last weekend. The Garden Fair was packed all three days and we all sold out of everything which was a nice surprise. A fellow exhibitor gave me an excellent price for a lovely Magnolia Stellata h had left at the end of the day. Now have to find somewhere to put it! There were some super plants men there all clearing end of season stock, primarily because most of the Garden Fairs were cancelled this year so many plants had outgrown pots. So much to do in the garden before weather breaks again. 11/12/13th October sees the Moon ascending in front of Sagittarius so Fruit days. Harvest ripened fruit and pop in some round as opposed to wrinkled peas and some Broad Beans for early Spring Crops. 14/15th October are Root Days ..Under cover sow some Carrots. RB off any shoots on stored Potatoes and lift the last of the Celeriac to avoid it greening up and resprouting. Lift last of Beetroot as well before it goes woody unless you are keeping the leaves for Autumn Salads. 16/17th October are Flower Days. Harvest Broccoli and Autumn Cauliflowers. Harvest Saffron. Sow some perennial Sweet Peas in front of trellis.mark where you have down the. As they may not sprout until March or April. 18/19/20th October are Leaf Days with a Full Moon on the 20th at 3.56pm. Harvest The last of the Summer Salads and pick the first Lambs Lettuce Leaves to encourage new growth before the colder weather checks them. Start to protect salads with fleece overnight. Cut Tarragon down to within 10cms of the soil and cover with straw or bracken to provide winter insulation. If covering with dead leaves protect with some chicken wire so that they will not fly away when we get the first Winter Storms. Must go and scout around the garden to find place for magnolia. Teach me not to pre-plan... Temptation too much! I was going to buy a fruit tree but did not find one☹️ Happy Gardening 😊
