Lifted 2x25 ft rows of spuds today,  took most of the day! The rain had softened the top few inches of soil but it's  still very hard underneath.  As I'm  sure you know you need to lift from the side, as if you dig in the middle of the row you damage too many. They are 2nd earlies,  I would normally have lifted them weeks ago but the ground was too dry and hard to even attempt it. The gamble seems to have worked   I think leaving them in the soil protected them from the heat. Wanted them out now as now we've had rain I was worried the slugs would be rampant.
    One rows worth.

    All in store now.

@Allotment Boy , hello dug my potatoes 🥔 up ages ago as all the green tops had died , no problems digging them up as the loomy soil was bone dry

I am on London clay,  the soil in the row was OK but to either side where I had walked to  earth up etc, it was rock hard. Even yesterday after the rain  I  had to carefully ease the fork back and forth over and over to get underneath them. The last few plants were near to some tomatoes,  and must have benefited from surplus water from them, as there are some very large tubers amongst them. 😀

Here's one for you knowledgeable people, what does my Golden Delicious apple think it's doing!
Fruit ready to pick, plus new buds just opening! Will this mean no fruit next year? As these will get pollinated but not survive the winter.🤷‍♀️

I might be tempted to snip those buds off feeling sure that the tree would produce more next spring.

I have posted pictures in the past showing Apples on one of my trees with blossom at the end of the same shoots.  The flower probably won't set and they seem to be normal next spring. This variable weather seems as confusing to plants as it is to us.

I was more bothered by the possibility of less fruit next year @Allotment Boy @barry island

I think you will be OK.

I  did a bit at plots today, I added some shredded prunings to one of my compost bins and transferred some from another part bin. It was all so dry I felt compelled to water each layer as I added it, no sign of it rotting down at all.

I find that the trees usual perform to suit themselves there are a lot of variables to how much fruit each tree will produce your summer buds probably won't make much difference one way or tuther although it may make some difference but I suspect that nothing can be done about it.
