Hello , stained outside of shed , put a home made grill over window , door handle and door stopper fitted Need to put chicken wire around base to stop mice 🐁 & rats 🐀 going under neath it , hoping to get to plot at weekend , Christmas decorations now taking priority
Off to plant my long awaited Raspberry canes today.First lot went missing in the post so the bed has been empty and waiting for a while! Might get there before the rain comes...
Plot today bit of digging and building an extra chicken run cause of the Avain flu that is about, done a bit of pruning the other day dahlia area - part filled garden waste bin
Managed some time on the plots yesterday, spent some time checking the stored potatoes, with the mild weather some are beginning to sprout already. Cleared some weed & grass from under the plum tree, there are some naturalised bulbs there which are beginning to show already.
Got to plots again today spent most time pruning Blackberry and last summers Raspberry canes. I keep saying it but I really need to re-do the Raspberries as they have been in the same spot a long time & are gradually diminishing.
Hi folks 1st time on this thread and I'm not actually an allotmenteer, I've only been growing veg for 1 year now in 2 raised beds and have now increased this with a new large raised bed and a biggish greenhouse due in January. This will give me approximately 110 sqft of growing space, would this be a big enough area to produce a substantial amount of vegetables ?
Not aiming to feed my family entirely from it and not wanting to grow spuds which take quite a bit of space. My initial menu of plants would be beetroot, carrots, french and runner beans, kale, chard, spinach, radish, summer and winter salads, leeks, tomatoes, blub fennel, turnips and swede.
I have room to extend in the future (Mrs Wilderbeast doesn't know that yet) and add maybe 30sqft more, this would all be growing space not paths or shed areas etc. Is this a decent space or at all comparable with an allotment.
@Wilderbeast , hello , looking at the time you posted this you didn’t sleep well , which is not surprising , hope hand is getting better
Your veg plot sounds big enough to me , you might find some crops just don’t work , for example Swedes just aren’t worth me growing , the carrots 🥕 are bigger so I no longer try I have also found that seed tap works really well
Well I like coming to this tread even though I don't have an allotment @Wilderbeast . 😁 My veg area I've just worked out is half of yours ( plus I have a 8x10 greenhouse) This year I grew enough French beans, spring onions, carrots, lettuce and early and late potatoes for us ( the late potatoes lasted about 10 weeks as I don't grow too many) so your area will do well, when you can get to do it.
@Wilderbeast nice to "see" you on this thread. As a reference a standard 10 pole plot equates to 250 sq M . So your area is approaching a 1/2 plot which is plenty. You could try a few 1st early spuds as they taste great and you can follow on with another crop as they will be clear in time (end June - July). Otherwise concentrate on high value, or things that really benefit from being very fresh.
