Not long back from the plots. Summer pruned 4 espalier apple trees and thinned some of the fruit. Picked a trug full of plums, there are loads more. In spite of the dampness in the air the ground is quite dry, did a bit of spot watering but really needs more.
Hello all , full day at plot as o/h emulsioning spare bedroom , I’ll finish off tomorrow, then start glossing the wood , will order new carpet next week
Picked all broad beans and put plants in compost bin Trimmed garlic , nicely dry so brought bit home More French beans , spring onions & courgettes Weeded strawberry bed , lots of jobs still to do
My plot's looking good the courgette plants are producing and no mildew on the leaves which is very rare, spuds will soon be ready to harvest fingers crossed for a good one, runner beans full of flower, borlotti beans growing well but no flowers, carrots look ok, kohl rabi good, toms in greenhouse better than last year but a problem with weedkiller persists hopefully next year will be back to normal, sweetcorn look ok but hard to tell till harvested, gooseberries all harvested first crop for two years weather did for the last year and the one before too hot early on too cool when they needed to ripen, pumpkins have fruit on too early to say how big they will be, toms in the greenhouse at home looking good also melons getting bigger, chilli plants healthy and flowering. Have to keep an eye on the allotment weed problem because it's this time of year that the blighters creep up on you and before you know it they are everywhere, oh! and started digging the plot over my new regime is to get it done early after 2019/20 when it was too wet for months to dig.
Just lucky did some strimming of my plot other day weeds and grass - as now the lights on the battery do not work and tried to charge said done then plugged in the battery later to test and no go strimmer broke still the mac allister one had for a few years even if only gave me 15minutes in each time use this last year was something so will need to sort out a new one sometime, did all the grass paths around plot last week only grown a bit
Removed my blighted tomatoes today now in the green waste bin for this week collection, got really wet when doing that, Have been harvesting lots Blackberries from off my plot wild bit at end
Allotment show this Saturday they are having on the small bit of grass 1/2 plot outside shop first time as most times have in other places off site not entering anything not much growing well my plot
Home from holiday to some good, bad and indifferent. The good is that all the seeds sown before I left have emerged nicely, carrots, rocket, turnips, kale, beetroot all through. The bad is tomato blight in the greenhouse 😭😭 have removed all the obvious blighted plants and am researching green tomato chutney. Haven't had more than a dozen tomatoes to date, it's my 1st ever tomato crop and very disappointed. Thankfully the outdoor sungold are still ok and have taken a large bowl off this morning. The indifferent is that the aubergine are now covered in fruits which need some sunshine, the borlotti beans are swelling nicely, parsnips are growing at pace, the remaining spring onions have turned into some big bulb onions, courgette has continued to fruit and there was 4 ready and the neighbours have had several, the mangetout have finished and I've pulled them up and I planted out the Pak choi. DAMNED TOMATO BLIGHT 😠😠😠😠
@Wilderbeast , sorry to hear about your blight , seems to be more this year than usual , never had it on toms so far Some main crop potatoes had it , cut the stems but that stops the potatoes 🥔 growing , will be interesting to see what they are like Need to spend so time at allotment
@GWRS safe to say I'm gutted. Wish my Dad was still around to give me a guiding hand I'm flying totally blind with the tomatoes, I've seemingly fluked it with all my other veggies as a newbie. Not sure if it's come from neighbouring spuds that have got blight.
@Wilderbeast , the potatoes could have past it on , perhaps not enough ventilation in green house but that just a guess As I said lots of people seem to have had problems with blight this year
There's been a lot of blight here already. It started at the end of June and has got progressively worse as the weeks have gone on. So far my greenhouse Toms are OK, the only outside ones surviving are blight resistant.
