Allotment Gardening

  • Allotment for three hours this morning digging the plot over/removing weeds, I really can't cope with much more than that now and to think when I first got my plot in 2012 I would be there for up to six hours a day four or five times a week. The soil is only just dry enough to work and as it's so wet it is slow going, we are forecast a few dry days and with the sun and a nice breeze I'm hoping that the soil becomes less claggy and easier to dig, fingers crossed.
  • Well you did more than me @barry island I was on plot too today only did about 1 1/2 hours digging, mixed it up with some other jobs. The ground is still very wet but as you say the wind is helping dry things up a bit.

  • @Allotment Boy Went today for four hours my plot is 4.5 Metres wide and I dug about 1 Meter length in all of that time, I shall go tomorrow while the weather is still dry if I dig another Metre I will have enough complete for the potato bed when it's time for them to go in. My soil is weird one fork produces light crumbly soil while the next one is sticky wet. One thing that I'm sure of though is that there will be a plague of slugs this year as I have never seen so many eggs as I have this year.
  • After last years spud disasters I will be resorting to nematodes again this year. Have not used them for a couple of years but so much damage last year even though most of summer was hot & dry -odd.

  • I'm considering nematodes myself this year, I've been to the allotment every day this week digging while the weather's dry before tomorrows predicted storm I must have done about 15 hours, I haven't quite broke its back but nearly broke mine.
  • Terrible storm going on here - look though it will be quite a lot of damage.
Doing ok here with slugs getting the chickens going around plot eating them well

Barry Island have you got any pictures of your plot

Gardengirl , we had a bad storm earlier, had to tie small plastic g/h down and take down hanging baskets 🧺
Glad chicken 🐓 are eating your slugs 🐌
Currently redecorating a spare bedroom so allotment on hold but will have go and see if everything’s ok
  • @Gardengirl these are from 2018
  • Raspberries, and Gooseberries in wire cage, and a glimpse of the Dalek composting bins and the vacant overgrown plot next door.
  • This is the brassica scaffold netting to keep butterfly's off, just too much trouble so giving winter brassicas a miss this year.
