  • @pitter-patter I have Benjamin britten too and I love it. It has been brilliant this year so far and becoming one of my favourite roses so far!!

@Daniel Rutherford: it’s good to hear, Daniel. I like the smell as well - raspberryish to my nose.

I am in need of colour combination advice. Imagine an apricot coloured rose with orange, pink and yellow hues (The Lark Ascending, for example, or something similar) and that you want to combine it with another rose close to it. What colour would you choose?
Something light blue, lavender or purple would be obvious for contrast but there isn't a good choice in these roses. Yellow or orange for some kind of monochrome scheme? I feel it would be boring and it can be easily wrong (like too yellow or wrong shade of orange). White would be safe but lacking something. If pink, what shade of pink would look good with apricot?

I found this picture (not mine) with TLA, Gertrude Jekyll, and The Pilgrim:

Matter of preference really, and you could interplant with lilac purple flowers to set everything off.

Thanks for the photo, Omori, I've been thinking about something in Gertrude type of pink but wasn't really sure, that photo helps.

I don't mind colour clashes with roses but if you are thinking of growing The Lark Ascending... I feel I should advise that.. it's very thorny... very vigorous... capable of 8 or 10 foot tall, but is very beautiful ... flowers like water lily's all over the bush from top to toe...   it's not a rose to mess with too much.. prune hard during winter as it will soon be 6 foot tall by June..

'Minerva'... the blooms fade to a purple/grey colour...

'Absolutely Fabulous'... a large growing floribunda/shrub rose..

Thank, @Marlorena. I am considering it for a spot in my garden but I am also considering some other roses... changing my mind every other day. The size is tricky, I know it can be a big rose but on the other hand, many roses grow smaller than stated and more compact in my garden, I think it is because of the coastal winds here. I don't mind the thorniness.
Do you think it would grow as a small climber, with support, or is it too shrubby for that?
What are your favourite roses which would be a bit smaller, either apricot or yellow/pink mix or light orange, healthy, weather resistant (rain), tolerant of partial shade and with an informal or wild look?

@edhelka … I grew it on a 6.5 foot obelisk...and it grew much taller than that.. eventually I found it too much for where I placed it... in another garden it might be different but not suitable for where I am now... it didn't need the obelisk as it's self supporting but I needed to keep things narrow by tying it in, almost like a tall bundle.. it's stunning when seen from a distance..

I have a new rose which is fast becoming an absolute favourite and a star in my garden... it's called 'Scented Garden'... available from Style Roses... it's just finished its first flush and already has buds for the next.. it's healthy and growing in a shady spot...against an obelisk as it seems capable of climbing... I'm hoping for 5 foot at least...  totally rain resistant and musk scented..

    ..love these buds..
