@Marlorena Here is a pic of my bare root Dizzy Heights I planted during the winter
You can see that it is covered in greenfly (as all my roses are).
I have tapped the greenfly off the rose this evening.

Can you tell me if greenfly would do much harm to a small rose?
And also what should I use to combat these (if I need to)?

You could try a spray bottle of soapy ( washing up liquid) water, it helps with the greenfly without hurting the plant @gutties 🙂

Agree with the above, although I just use water... they'll be back the next day most likely... unless you want to be more lethal and use a damp piece of tissue paper and run it over the shoot to scoop them off..
.. that's a strong thick shoot on your climbing rose, it's well able to look after itself and will grow quite tall.. that shoot may develop into an 8 foot cane or so...  you won't be wanting to worry about aphids when it's that height, so try not to concern yourself with them too much...

I haven't sprayed a rose with anything other than water in 30 years...

OK, thanks.  I just wasn't sure what sort of harm those aphids would do to it as it's still very young

Thanks, Marlorena. There are five roses in that border, two newly planted (Ebb Tide and Minerva, not visible in the photo), two no ID and Gentle Hermione.
And I underestimated my roses, I have buds!
This is the most developed, on a no ID (illegible tag) climbing rose.

And this is Just Joey (is it a bud? I think it is):

I also counted my roses. I have 25.
    Newly planted this year: 8
    Known ID: 8
Unknown ID: 9 (but some of them are multiples, I think I have maybe 5 unknown varieties but not really sure :) we will see later)
    It's exciting.

Yes certainly a bud... coming along nice... I've got Gentle Hermione and Minerva... I hope you find i.d's for your roses.. I always think it's nice to know just who they really are, as I have an interest in rose heritage...

Purple roses tend to need more water and less strong sun than other roses.. they can wilt in heat.. so I had to move Minerva last summer in those conditions we had then..

Looking forward to more photos of your roses, especially those no i.d.'s...

Yay, its stopped raining and is sunny today - but boy have we needed that rain! Heres a few of mine...

Gertrude Jekyll, behaving herself for now, but come the real heat she will send up massive long shoots:

A trio of Lady Emma Hamilton, with the fresh green foliage of Golden Celebration behind:

Lady of Shallot, getting huge again, despite being cut down by a good third, but I’m happy to let her:

And finally, my new little tiddler, Wild Rover, taking his time:

    A question about Munstead Wood:

Does it ever get as big as DA says it does? My roses tend to get larger than the height stated, but MW is staying determinedly around 50cmx50cm (it says 110cmx110cm in the handbook of roses). This is its third season...

Probably a @Marlorena question, but if anyone else has it I’m curious to know how it does for you?

I have 3 of these and I've just measured the largest one and it's exactly 2ft 6ins height and width..so that's about 75cm x 75cm I think..  I'm expecting 3 to 3.5 feet this year..  it did throw up a longer cane last year to nearly 4 foot but I didn't like it, very stiff and upright, and so I cut it back..

Yours roses are doing great... I think your 'Wild Rover' is taking off actually and will need some support later on..  it will throw up more climbing type canes from the base too..

I like your choice of pots..
