I don't know if you allow this on your thread B3, but I'm going to say it anyway - I am SO fed up with the low-flying military helicopters we've had repeatedly flying over for 4 days now. Normally they would be of interest, perhaps even a bit exciting, but it's too often, too low, too noisy, and the reason for them doing this is too annoying, depressing and unwelcome that I don't want to be reminded of it (him) any more than I have to be.

Right, got that off my chest.

  • I think the like facility is useful on a few threads where people are posting humorous comments (eg this one). I often smile at someone's post but don't have anything to add so the like button gives me the chance to show that I enjoyed it.

Probably also useful on photo threads for the same reason though I haven't yet used it for that.

I definitely don't see it as being in any way competitive!

The thing us, with a very few exceptions (e.g.ceanothus ), i like most plants. So, if I liked ,I would be applauding the photographic skill rather than the gardening skill.

That's no bad thing on a Gallery thread.

There are some amazing photos on that thread, but maybe due to lack of self-esteem, I'm now less inclined to have my efforts rated.

Is it wrong to use a like button as a shorthand way of saying to somebody ‘I admire your photographic skill. You have given thought to the composition, maybe waited until the light was most favourable to show the beauty of the subject, and took care with the focus.’?

I’m less liberal than you, B3, with my plant opinions. Can’t stand valerian, begonias, double daffodils, many variegated plants, multi coloured busy lizzies, petunias etc, French marigolds, red hot pokers, the rose Harry Wheatcroft ... and several more.

Will a Like convey all that? It might just say ‘I like yellow roses’ or ‘I like the vase it’s in’ or ‘I like that you got it in focus this time after the fuzzy pic you posted yesterday’.

I just think it’s so ambiguous.

Checked Harry Wheatcroft out. It is a trifle sudden 😖

My point is, the button doesn't say any of that. Someone could have taken an amazingly skilful photo of that rose and they'd think you liked the rose. You might even get one for your birthday.

    So how about:

    Like a lot
    Like but with reservations
    Fairly lukewarm
    Not sure why you bothered
I bet you have a plastic lawn as well.

    Maybe not!
