I'm really confused or just old. People are liking things but i can't see what they like. Has the meaning of 'like' changed to 'agree' or yes I've read/ scanned/ can't be bothered to read it but well done for making the effort to post it?
I've been thinking some more about this 'like' business . It feels like a rating system. Like (similar to) Ofsted reports. I don't want my potting shed posts to be graded. It takes the fun out of it. I hope I will be able to ignore the third icon but it's hard. If the majority want it, that's fine. But, for me, it's already changing how I feel about the site.
My take on the like button is that I will use it on posts only if they amuse me or are thought provoking. I’ll be more liberal with its use on the Garden Gallery site. If a garden or photo appeals to me I will click like. Not all will share my taste and they’ll click where I won’t.Â
I don’t see it as a negative move to have this button. A little while ago I was at a village open gardens event. In all cases the owner was very prominently positioned near the entrance and sometimes I found I just did not like the garden at all - far too prim and prissy for my taste. But, with my fingers crossed, I would say how charming the garden was and how much care and effort had been put into its maintenance. The owners would normally beam with pride.
Adopting a similar strategy here would mean every photo being liked, and that would be pointless. That it is pointless, even counter productive, is a valid viewpoint taken by many and I accept the thinking behind it.

I’m sure Trump would sell us some ... at a price ... but I doubt if he knows how to spell them 😉Â
