I have a few Clematis, which I’ve had a while, but the labels are no longer attached, so their names escape me! The one on the wall should be beautiful, as I’ve cut back and trained properly this year.

Fairygirl, how high is your Niobe? The catalogue says 6 to 8’ but mine, in now for three years, are no more than waist high. For the first two years they somewhat limped along, slug damage I suspect.

Mine is allowed to sprawl along that screen, Picidae, and also go through the other side. I'd say it's around 5 or 6 feet in height and probably slightly less in spread, but it's always very productive in terms of growth. It grows up one of the apple trees nearby as well. I allow it to spill forward too, and it means there are lots of flowers near the base.

I expect if I tied it in more carefully and more thoroughly, it would get higher, but I like it being a bit messy. It's beside my little pond and provides a real splash of rich colour next to the  ground covering planting by the pond.
Mine gets bigger and stronger every year - it's probably around 7 years old now. It faces north east and south west [with early shade on that side]  and doesn't get much attention - plenty of water and a bit of B,F&B in spring is about it.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I planted a few 1.75£ ones from Morrisons a few years ago and now after 3 years they are coming out properly and look sturdy.

Ime you cant beat Morrisons for value for money plants (and surprisingly good variety too for a Supermarket)

My Nubia is in full flower now, like you @Fairygirl I'm allowing it to spill over as it's under a window. This is its first full year.

That new one is beautiful  @Richard Hodson , so unusual how about Emperor's Trumpet 🙂 Let us know how things go with it.🙂

Are some varieties of clematis better climbers than others?  I have 2 Ashvars, one planted last autumn and the other this spring.  Both are doing well and growing vigorously but seem reluctant to twine round their obelisks.  I've been encouraging them by tying them gently to the uprights but do you think as they get older they'll get better at clinging on?

Picture not essential but it might help explain what I mean.
