Here's mystery plant that is growing about 8ft up a viburnum on our back garden. It's having a bit of a rest at the mo, it was covered in flowers last month. The mystery is not what it is (I think it's a Polish Spirit) but why - we have no recollection of planting it, and we've got one growing on a wigwam in the front so I wouldn't knowingly buy another!
This year I've had a bit of a splurge. So far I've bought a Julia Correvon for my mother's garden, Montana Rubens and Carnaby (all from aldi), Silver Moon for a shady corner by the house, a Picotee from thorncroft, 3 tiny, weedy Bijou from yougarden, a larger Bijou and a Filligree from a GC, and my latest (but not necessarily last) acquisition is a Piilu from the same GC.
They're not kidding when they say Piilu is free-flowering, it's already got 8 flowers and about 14 buds.
I don't know why there seem to be so many bicoloured cultivars in my shopping basket. This is my first Carnaby flower:
It doesn't look like Picotee's going to flower this year unfortunately.
I've been experimenting with the two dwarf clems: filligree is in a pot but isn't flowering (but it has been); I'm growing the Bijou in a hanging basket - absolutely loving it!
@AnniD , your 'Princess Diana' has me mystified, it's nothing like mine, which is more like pixy hats at the moment. Are there two varieties do you know?
Hi @Lizzie27 there aren't 2 different ones that I know of, but I could be wrong. Below is another flower from the same plant. I have another Princess Diana in the garden, I will take a look at that one and see what the flowers are like, if there are any yet !
...just popped in to say lovely clematis everyone... I've been catching up... great to see so many wonderful clematis from members.. ...I do wish sometimes they wouldn't name them after people, especially those who have recently passed on... it's difficult to be polite about it, as unfortunately I've managed to kill no less than two Princess Diana's... through neglect and moving... it also means I am left only with 'Prince Charles'... as I grew them together..
I know what you mean Marlorena, so out of curiosity l looked up "Princess Diana". Apparently it was originally introduced in 1984 and was called "The Princess of Wales", but that name had been used before so it was renamed . It's one of my favourites, in fact if l could only grow one, it would be this. This one came from my mum's garden (she's unable to garden any more), l bought one for her and one for myself, l think from Malvern but not 100% sure. Hers always flowers slightly ahead ! @Lizzie27, l had a look but they are only very tiny at the moment, they do look like the ones here though http://www.clematisinternational.com/page106.html
@AnniD, Mine looks exactly the same colour, but the blooms hang down (so far) like little pixie hats. I understood it was a scrambler not a climber so I put it next to a Potentilla Abbotswood (white one) and rose 'Eglantyne'( a light pink) which it is happily climbing over. This is the first year of bloom for me. Will post a photo when I get back home.
@AnniD I bought a voluceau "twig" from Morrison's the other day thinking it was redder, in fact I imagined it to be more like the colour your westerplatte has turned out. But yours looks lovely anywayb so as you say, nevermind, it certainly seems to have a couple of red-mauve blooms (newly opened?) So it could redden as it matures (#ever hopeful)
I know what you mean @mikeymustard, l was expecting something more like "Niobe" l think. Still it's a nice healthy plant so for that price l can't really complain too much ! @Lizzie27 , did you manage to get a photo of your Princess Diana?
