  • My “Princess Kate” is just about showing 4” shoot - is that even normal? “Westerplatte” is covered with buds, but little princess is still thinking if she should grow a little or just leave it be for this year.
If anybody has made any experience with Princess Kate - please let me know, as I’m starting to get worried.

I have two pot-planted Princess Kates that I bought in August 2017... they're romping away. Will post a pic tomorrow if I remember...

  • Thank you @jannyb Mine is from August 2018, growing in the ground. Looking forward to your pictures. Might show them to my tiny Kate to encourage her 😂😂

@Big Blue Sky don't worry about your Princess Kate clematis, mine is at the same stage as yours. I fed all my clematis a sprinkle of food today, thought I'd try proper clematis food, I usually just use fbb. Then l watered them all really well and gave them all another bit of a compost mulch.
I have quite a few clematis around the garden. I like to plant them to grow up through my taller roses. Also two obelisk for clematis, one with a rose too. All my clematis are at varying stages of growth depending on situation and species.
Princess Diana is the most advanced, about 150cm high. Betty Corning, Madam Julie Corevon, Blue Angel, Polish Spirit, Dark Eyes, Prince Charles, Hagley Hybrid, Ville de Lyon and Fascination are all about 30cms high.
Prince George, Flora Purpurea Elegans and Etoile de Violette are only about 15cms high.
Poor old Margaret Hunt is recovering well after the dog trampled her to shreds chasing a wood pigeon and is now sending up new shoots.
I'm pleased to see that clematis Mandsurika has bulked up and is growing strongly. I was worried a little about where I'd planted it.
Alas l can't remember where l planted clematis Rosemoor. I'm hoping it's still out there somewhere, and because my dog was still a puppy last summer, she removed and chewed the labels just for fun , bless her she has stopped doing that now.
I bought my SIL a couple of £1.69 Etoile Violette clematis from Aldi last weekend. She loves the colour of mine so l thought I'd treat her. I've potted them on into 2litre deep pots and will give them to her on her birthday early August.
I noticed in the Aldi flyer that they are having summer flowering clematis grown in 2litre pots in store this coming Thursday. £5.99 each and it said 16 varieties.

You have a good range of clematis @lilysilly.. and thanks for the info about Aldi and their clematis this week.... I might take a look at those... I saw the cheap ones the other day - great selection, but I might want something a bit bigger, so at 5.99 sounds good..

    @Big Blue Sky
Morning! Here’s one of my Princess Kates. Looks a bit neglected, tbh (should probs spread the shoots out a bit), but they’re on the drive, planted to hide the fence, and not somewhere I spend a lot of time...

PS I tried to upload this photo when it was too large. I hope it hasn't come through several times...

I have a photo resizer app that works really well @Janie B, you should have a look for one makes posting much easier.🙂

Thanks @purplerallim. They usually are fine from iPhone to thread, but for some reason this one was too large (too much detail, maybe?). I resorted to sending an email to myself, and choosing to send it as 'small'. Will look into a resizer, ta.

@lillysilly I bought a little liner of Margaret Hunt, I like the colour looking "online" a bit like Hagley hybrid though not sure of the flower size, I am hoping it won't be too large though I do know it is a bit gappy, part of its charm I think.
If mine does not do well I will see if I can give it a dose of dog :)

Many of the clematis liners that the supermarkets sell seem to be along the same lines .
They get different batches in with a mix of an almost set list of cultivars.
I would imagine a set of relatively easy to grow ones.
I traced the commonest list to a wholesalers last year. Not that there is anything wrong, just interesting.

@marlorena it is even worse that to add to the confusion there is an "English" version of Francis Rivis that is rumoured (see the Hull Uni site) to be Blue Dancer too.

I hope our Blue Dancer one is as labelled, but decided that it is pretty and growing at the moment, that'll do :D
