I have bought both for this garden and they are still in big pots till they get a permanent home. Coping well so far so should do very well when let loose.
Thanks folks for all these suggestions. I like the look of 'My Angel', Obelixx, but it has been described on another thread as "an absolute thug" so I'm not sure I can risk it.
'Black Tibet' is very attractive, and striking, but it doesn't seem to be available anywhere in the UK. Any idea how I might find it, Richard?
Tempting to call it the Christmas Clematis, but it is in fact 'Jean Cumpston' - and it seems comfortable in this position (sheltered by the shed from the prevailing westerlies). Lots of buds and now a few flowers.

I had this one in my Belgian garden and it was lovely with multi-toned flowers fading from clear yellow to dusky red - http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/new-clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=511

Jean Cumpston is a really good Winter flowering clematis. Be aware that it is Summer dormant, looks dead for a few months.
