As yet I haven't worked out how to collect the seed from my TRV petunias - once the flowers die I have been removing them but can't see any obvious seed to collect for next year. Can you help @Kili - are your plants perennial or grown from seed each year - they look fabulous don't they.
Hi Guernsey Donkey2. So far all mine have been grown from seed but, I think I'm going to take some cuttings into a large pot and stick them in the greenhouse and see what comes out at the end of the winter next year. I'll be doing seed sowing as well next year.
I havent a clue how it self seeded so I turned to youtube. It turns out after the flower has died if you don't remove the old flower stalk it produces a seed pod.
Couple of explanatory videos here for those of us not knowing how to collect the seed.
Hey Guernsey Donkey2 had a nice break in Guernsey visiting the Mother in Law recently stayed at the peninsular . Had to fly there are after CONdor cancelled the ferry due to the weather. I had planned to go on the car ferry to France from Guernsey but due to the ferry being cancelled I had to fly back to Jersey to pick up the car and go from there. On arrival home the Frezzer had packed up and everything was ruined after sorting that out continued the holiday the next day back on CONdor only to arrive in France to find the hotel we had booked closed for refurbishment.
Cant say I was happy at the time but what can you do but laugh and realise C'est La Vie.

Oh @Kili what can I say about your holiday except I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay in Guernsey with M-in_Law. You aren't the only one to be disappointed with Condor, it used to be such a good, reliable company but ever since they started using The Liberation their timetable has become a bit of a joke, if it isn't engine trouble the weather has been against them - the ferry won't run if the wind is more than a force 5 which it often is across the Channel. Word is that Brittany Ferries is going to take over Condor - perhaps. Better luck with the next holiday.
Those two Petunia tutorials are brilliant and now I realize I hould not be so hasty to remove the little seed heads when they are green but leave until brown and crispy, although I can still dead head the actual flowers. Thanks for enlightening me.

Yeah... roll on Brittany Ferries. Lets hope there a more reliable company than CONdor.
You learn something everyday with the power of the Internet. I did not realise after the flower had dropped the seed pod formed. I used to cut the whole stalk off before that revelation but, now I know I'm going to collect a whole bunch of seed from those lovely Petunias for sowing next year.

Me too! It's been raining here for a few hours now, but when it dries I will be out there inspecting my Petunia Tidal Red for obvious seed pods.
Condor has been having problems with the Liberation boat for a few years now and has given Guernsey as a holiday destination such a bad name with the unreliability of it's sailings. However although we are hoping that a more reliable ferry will be running soon, we will be sorry to see what was once a Guernsey owned shipping company to be sold off.
@Lyn I've been very happy with mine. Gave half away to friends. I put 3 in an 18" basket and these were stunning until the relentless heavy rain and wind ... they looked so bashed that a week or so ago I cut them right back and they are growing again. 3 others I put in a large pot and they are still looking good albeit they need some serious deadheading. Hopefully summer has returned now .... I'm hoping to overwinter them in the greenhouse.
@Marran I think I will have to cut my TRV down too as they have suffered with the recent wet, stormy weather too and although there are still a few flowers and buds at the ends of the stems the plants are producing less and are becoming quite leggy. Hopefully they will revive in time to give some more flowers - looking at where I have dead headed them - I think someone mentioned that the plants were sterile and don't produce seed which other petunias do. I can't find a seed head on any of my TRV's, so I will try overwintering the plants in the greenhouse too.
I haven't seen a single seed pod or a potential for any. And I haven't been too fussed about dead-heading as the flowers seem to dry up and drop off quite elegantly. I'm intrigued.
They certainly do look attractive @Fire and I know what you mean with the flower heads falling off when finished. I have now given my plants a summer chop as the stems were growing straggly, long and with just one or two flower heads on the very ends of the stems so I am hoping the chop will re-rejuvenate them into produce more flower buds lower down. I love your containers, so individual and attractive too.
