Seems there are so many of us who just struggle to get a decent sleep.
Mind you, my wife was up before me this morning. She even put the key in the door to allow me to put the rubbish out for the dustman.

I'm not sure a memory foam topper will help @Ergates
I have tried both mattress and topper, when being away, the worse of which was the mattress as I could hardly get out of the bed it was like climbing a mountain! As for the topper it sinks were you lay and cups around you, which for me made turning over difficult. Maybe it would work for you, but it's an expensive thing if it doesn't.

That’s what I was afraid of, @purplerallim. I have a duvet type mattress topper which has helped quite a bit, but it seems to have flattened down now. Friends have complained that the memory foam can be very warm, which I could do without, and I hadn’t thought about difficulty in turning over, which we both do a lot. Seems like no easy remedy.

@Ergates. I fear the foam topper won't work. You might be better off with a lattice one which has more spring but is more expensive. If a duvet has helped you until now what about a new one?
I have chronic back pain, I need 'help' when turning so in the end I opted for an ordinary spring mattress from IKEA with two thin toppers which I had laying around but Ikea still sells. Your friend is right when she says that turning in one of those foam mattresses is like climbing a mountain.

I am sure the same is sold in the UK and hopefully cheaper!

  • We have lived in our house for 22 years, and we bought the mattress before we moved here.
I know that it is said a mattress should be renewed every ten years, but our one is ideal for me. Very firm. Really doesn't "give" much.

    But, it does squeak.

My wife chose the mattresses for the spare beds, and has made use of them all over the years. But each one, in turn, has become soft, and she finds them all uncomfortable.

We paid quite a bit for our mattress at the time, but given it has lasted over 25 years, I'd say it has been value for money.

We do turn it every four to eight weeks - first round, then over, etc. I've probably got the invoice somewhere, but I imagine the make and model is long gone.

No mattress topper. I find they commute!!

What a coincidence, @coccinella. We popped into Ikea yesterday, and I did look at the mattress pads in passing. Our current mattress is from Ikea, as was our previous one. I had a mattress topper before we ‘downsized’ from a super king to a king bed, but was put off buying another by the cost. We probably had the equivalent of the Tustna, but I was eyeing up the cheaper Tussoy, which is memory foam. I must look up whether they have a return policy.
I did recently read of someone who wanted to return an unused mattress, but it had doubled in size after he removed it from its box, and he couldn’t therefore get it back in its original packaging!

I know that topper costs double the mattress I bought! My mattress was very expensive too and 24 years old. Since I could not find the equivalent I opted for Ikea, who does take back mattresses. You have 90 days! It's very generous I think.
Mattresses are such a personal thing. OH loves to sink in one, so he has a foam, fortunately our bed takes two singles.

I don’t think the mattress topper is included in the 90 day Ikea exchange scheme. I notice that the cheaper memory foam topper is described as being suitable for ‘calm sleepers’ which we are definitely not. Sounds as if that would rule it out, don’t like the prospect of feeling as if I am trying to climb out of quicksand! Two mattresses wouldn’t work for us either, our sleeping preference would mean we would probably end up huddled together in the gap! I did turn the duvet style topper round and give it a good shake, so hoping that will help for a little while.
Where are you, @rowlandscastle444? I do hope you haven’t left the forum? I do enjoy your reports, and it’s been an eye opener hearing about the actual experience of having to rely on hospital transport.
  • It's almost 4;30 am. Sleep pattern is unchanged. Still awake at the time when I should be asleep.
    Still here too, @Ergates
I complain about hospital, then think of those poor people in Gaza. I have it easy really.
  • Thank you rowlandscastle444, I've woken into uncomfortable feelings, and your humanity and perspective is good to meet at this time in the morning. All good wishes, Stephen.
