Back to oppressive heat and humidity, but I've been able to sort out 3 holding beds so far by going out early in the morning when it's somewhat cool.  The bindweed - I'll be seeing it in my nightmares!  My elecampane was so massive that I ended up cutting back 2/3 of the monster leaves and giant flower stems.  Underneath those, my crocosmia was desperately trying to bloom.  I really didn't plan these beds well, mostly because I thought I'd have everything planted in proper gardens by now.  Temporary plantings are now three years in.  :#

Metacomet soil with hints of Woodbridge and Pillsbury
  • I did the usual weeding. Cut out the remaining spent raspberry canes - I really must tie in the ones for next year, even though we don't anticipate being here that long. Tidied up the chard that has bolted. Okay, so I know I shouldn't have allowed them to bolt!!
Removed some of the excess apples from the trees. Picked blackberries.
  • i picked my one and only ripe tomato. Not a very large specimen. By the time I had cut out the blossom end rot damage there was not a great deal left. I cut off a small slither to taste before wasting my time, possibly, cooking it.
Wow! It was delicious, really sweet and tasty, so in the pan with a rasher of bacon, an egg and some cold home grown potatoes it went.

My neighbour  o:) brought me more stuff so I potted that up. I'm still shelving in the garage but I did have both doors open so I could pretend I was in the garden...till it rained in on me as I was surveying from my indoor/outdoor furniture. 🤣
  • I do the same in my conservatory, along with the cat. We sit together inside/outside, enjoying the fresh air not getting wet. The cat also does the same in the greenhouse, I have put an old chair in it so we can really be out in the garden, sheltered from wind and rain, even storms.
There is a lovely unique feeling to it.

We also have '1' tomato going red so snap @GWRS.
I can't  do any gardening at the moment but my lovely son came to see me and did some gardening jobs for me, emptied out a large dead phormium from a large pot so I can ask my new gardener to pot up the Desdemona rose my brother gave me for a birthday presie. Thought he'd have such a struggle with the phormium but it lifted straight out as I'd kept a cloche over it to keep it dry. Then he carried the compost  I need to plant the rose down from the top of the garden to the front ready for the gardener, lifted and swapped two paving slabs over and finally carried two old rotten wooden troughs down to the garage so we can take them to the tip when we're able to.

I am finding it so frustrating not to be able to do the jobs I used to be able to, same as you @Joyce Goldenlily but needs must.

No 'Polka' raspberries yet for us, not sure if we're going to get any but have already picked some blackberries.

  • Hi Lizzie,
Oh I know the frustration so well. I spoke to the Sec. of a local patchwork group yesterday in a similar situation, also bewailing not being able to do what she would like. I have found somewhere to donate my pile of patchwork magazines, also found a craft group to give my surplus wool, beads and sequin bits and bobs to . Seems such a waste to simply bin, so expensive to buy.
I found 2 more small, blossom end rotted tomatoes yesterday. By the time I had removed the rot there was just enough flesh left to make a single slice of bread sandwich with them. The rest of the tomatoes remain stubbornly very green. Not a hint of colour. It seems as if the rotten ones are ripening first.
No gardening done, the bucket full of tablets I am taking have given me a stomach upset, trying to work out which one is causing the problem.

@Joyce Goldenlily, sorry you're having problems today, hope you feel better soon.
I'm having to take 23 tabs a day!!! together with horrible tasting powder form laxatives to counteract the codeine. It's a big box!

The high dose steroids can apparently cause stomach issues.

  • No gardening this afternoon - unless I wear a cagoule. But the garden will get watered, and the water butts re-filled. So glad we went out yesterday for a jolly.
