Managed half and hour or so in the back garden, raking leaves off a couple of flower beds where I knew bulbs should soon be appearing, which they were! Such a cheerful sight, although I've had to cover a few of the clumps to protect them from the squirrels. Although very wet underfoot, it felt so good to be out in the fresh air, thankfully it was mild. My happy place!
I had to replace my plastic greenhouse after 4 years due to rust. Rather than throwing the shelves I’ve repurposed by using them on my raised beds to keep squirrels from digging up my tulips.
other than that I’ve potted up my first names snowdrop - might atom
I was going to dig up a clump or two of my snowdrops following Adam Frost's session on GW last night but it's been wild, wet and windy out there all day so I didn't feel like it!
Still very wild, wet, and windy down here today. I haven't been out of the house for 2 days, feeling awful. A heavy cold. The dog is almost beside himself with exasperation at me. I might try and take him for a very short walk later. I peeled the red wax from the amaryllis bulb and put it in a dish of water for a few hours before putting it into some compost. Sadly I do not think it will do well as the base of the root ball has been removed to create a flat surface for it to stand upright and all of the dead outer scales of the bulb have also been removed. Poor thing.
I did try today - honest. Got as far as being all togged up with wellies on and my hand on the back door when we had a sudden huge hailstorm, followed by torrential rain. Tried again after lunch and got as far as the driveway to rake leaves off nearby snowdrops but quickly got rained off and had to dash for the house. Hope tomorrow is better.
@Joyce Goldenlily, that sounds as though it's been prepared for indoor flowering and now probably won't survive outside. I believe the wax coating helps to keep it hydrated but I could be wrong. I was given one as a gift once but was not very keen on them.
Yes Lizzie, the amaryllis has taken up a lot of water already. I don't hold out much hope for it. You are excused, it is horrilble outside, I am going to light the fire and close the curtains on the world. I have just battled my way to the snowdrop bed. Not a sign of them, which reminded me, last year I noticed my snowdrops were a good 3-4 weeks behind my daughter's. The bed faces North and is in a corner at the base of two stone walls so probably a degree or two lower than the rest of the garden which faces South. It never has any sun at any time of the day, if there was any sun about at the moment. The wind has turned so cold and is howling with heavy downpours rushing through. The trees around here are thrashing about, I managed to walk the dog for 10 mins this morning. I am sure he feels cheated but I struggled to get around, and couldn't wait to get home.
We visited a garden centre today and got four little pots of snowdrops, plus a nice pot to plant them up in. We have no luck when growing snowdrops but, as we love them, we decided to try again this year. Snowdrops are duly potted up now and sitting in the garden. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they will grow. 🤞
