Sowed my tomato seeds. Cocktail Crush, Big Mama and Ozark Sunrise. Cosmos seeds sowed at the beginning of the week are up! Too wet outside but hopefully this week I can do some catching up. I am going to try hand pollinating the pear tree this year to see if that helps improve the setting as I only had one pear last year.
We took the netting off the shallots and weeded the 2 rows. Transplanted the onion seedlings (looking good). Planted out an oriental poppy that was in the wrong place (as usual!). Hoed between the broad beans and peas. Weeded the wildflower beds and sowed poppies and corncockle in one of the them. Planted out some replacement bulbs (others dug up by something). Such a difference to yesterday which was torrential rain but today lovely warm sunshine. Can't though cut the paths in the orchard as so so so wet.
Sun finally coming out in East Yorkshire, so off I went to the GC (again).
Came home with: six Strawberry plants Brunnera Silver Heart Berberis Harlequin Berberis Orange Rocket
I didn't actually want the Harlequin and only bought it because the first place I went to didn't have orange rocket, but now I have it I've found a spot for it and I think I'll quite like it.
Resisted the urge to buy another Hosta, but actually now I'm home I wish I'd got it, it was a fragrant one. Might go back tomorrow...
Slowly building a wildlife garden, in a new build in East Yorkshire.
Brought home (from my parents, yesterday, who are moving house into a much smaller place) a large planter - intending to use it to hold a gooseberry bush. Since I don't have any spare compost right now, and won't be going to get any until the middle of next week, I took the opportunity to give it a good clean - and got wet in the process, due to a heavy passing shower.
I think 15in deep and 18in across should be large enough.
I tidied up the corner of the front hedge where the under gardener had got a bit too enthusiastic, potted on my toms, sprinkled various old flower seed packets onto the verge outside and started pruning the salvia greggii's. OH then came home so stopped for a cuppa.
Beautiful, warm, dry and sunny day, up to 18c just now.
Dilemma on a Viburnum… most of the plant has died back so I fancy retiring it but OH says prune and see. I’m mentally already thinking what could go there instead…
Continued pricking out seedlings, 2 types of marigold, phlox, English daisies.
50 double freesia bulbs arrived this morning, so I quickly went to work and planted them in two clumps on my main flower bed, while there I discover Lily of the Valley has budded up to flower which was a nice surprise.
Been online shopping for a water butt, so far Screwfix is winning with a 210L butt for just under £45, stand and drainpipe connector included. While shopping came across a deep 55cm long plastic trough on legs, looks to be perfect for herbs. Thought it was a steel for £6.89. If it doesn't work out, it'll come in useful for another use.
Fixed a magnetic door closure fixing (40kg strength) for the shed to keep the door closed, also fitted a hook and eye on the door to hold it open.
