Unfortunately, @Lizzie27, we are in a wind alley and there is hardly a chance to use our parasol.
When I protected the ferns last week I had to tide the parasol to the west side fence. You can find me sitting on a little brick seat by that wall after 3 o’clock now and then. But our nice bench can only be on the east side where the concrete from the water pipe underneath is. We used to sit on it after 5 until the neighbour cut the trees.
Just in these days, I wouldn’t mind if that water pipe has a little break and waters the garden 😀 The north side is also a 2 meter wide concrete where the water pipe horizontally goes through the garden and I had put the greenhouse on it. In fact the actual gardening space is just 6x8 meters.
Our neighbour on the east side has planted another tree which will then rob us the wonderful morning sun entirely. It’s shame that the trees are on the wrong side.
Pulled out as much dead stuff as l needed to, l have decided that pots and baskets that are suffering will have to go. Even though l incorporated those water crystal things it doesn't seem to have made much difference this year. Possibly due to the compost, l don't know.
I have slightly got my mojo back, l think the decision to reduce the largest bed size has revived my enthusiasm. Dug up a massive clump of Veronica "Crater Lake Blue" from another bed, and with the aid of a pruning saw have cut it into 8 pieces which l'm going to pot up for the time being. I have some Echinacea that were grown from seed to fill the space for now to fill the space. I'm just concentrating on the other beds for the rest of this year, and any other plants l definitely want to keep.
Never experienced anything like this in the garden or allotment before Need to fill up house water butts again tomorrow I do wonder what’s going to survive ?
AA-maze-zing! The kale I sowed 4 days ago is through, as are some of the dwarf and climbing beans I sowed at the same time! I finally got around to sowing short rows of perpetual spinach, Chinese cabbage, swedes, turnips, fennel, spicy salad leaves, coriander, rocket, and mooli radish. I also spent quite a long time unearthing from a heap of brambles and grasses a length of galvanized mesh fencing which I may be able to use to stop my dog from climbing over the bank into my neighbour's garden to chase her chickens. His new after-walk treat.
Golly @purplerallim, that looks good, can you come and do mine please!
I pruned the bits I could reach today today but need to get the long reach pruner out to do the top. It's amazing just how tall and quickly apple trees grow.
Yes all that in one year @Lizzie27 we have a long handled pruner to do the job ( and a hubby who can reach helps) I do the lower bits, and tell him where to cut. Did a bit to the plum too, but now the bin is full.😁
I tied in the tomatoes. How do you grow bush tomtoes? They spread everywhere.
I also pruned my two apple trees, they look just like yours Purplerallim. Except I still have to do the centre of one of them which needs a step ladder. I found several, very unripe apples attacked by I assume blackbirds so have tried putting netting over the tree as it is a dwarf type. Why do the birds, definitely not wasps, have to try several fruit instead of just eating one. I picked about a dozen damaged apples, am going to make them into some kind of dessert.
I still have the quince tree to do. It is looking very sorry for itself as it has dropped a lot of its leaves due to the drought. I can only see 3 fruit on it and doubt they will hold.I must also give the pear tree a good long drink as the leaves are turning yellow, ready to drop. It is in an exceptionally large container, fan trained, against the end of the workshed.
Alot of trees have suffered from the heat @Joyce Goldenlily My Flamingo willow has die back, the plums leaves are looking dreadful, but there are plums. The healthiest tree is the apple, but even it has wooly aphids.

Please excuse the messy garden, as still awaiting dead heading 😊
