Hello , a couple of days in garden , tidying up and giving a lavender bush a major prune as it was getting in the way to my greenhouse door Had to water pots , as no rain for ages Also had to stand pots back up that last nights the wind blew over Noticed the grass is growing ! Going to allotment tomorrow
Raked over the veggie garden with a tyne tool. Sowed a few broad beans (too late really). I sowed some peas last week. Then got itchy and sowed some white radishes and little gems under tunnel - but I really don't expect a harvest - some leaves perhaps but ....
My plumbago is dry but hasn't lost their leaves. I should prune. The olive tree needs clipping too. Roses and wisteria are cut right back.
Did a heavy pruning job on 2 pyracanthas today, it was a hard fought battle but I think I came away a winner, if well battle scarred!
The garden really needs a good clean up. It's very messy, the shed is stuffed so full I can barely step into it, pots have blown all over the place. At least that gives me plenty to do during Feb!
Yesterday I dug a hole to sink a plastic trog to make a wildlife pond; what hard work it is to dig 60cm deep! So over night I had a rethink, and decided to ditch the idea of sinking the trog and to go for a small pond liner instead; leaving the hole at 40cm (ish) deep. A couple of 'shelves' was added to the 'hole' for a marsh marigold and maybe a small waterlily. Pond liner is coming tomorrow so I'm hoping to crack on.
The mound of soil from the hole was mixed with half a bag of compost and tipped into a large pot ready for a 2 year old dwarf weeping cherry which should be coming this week.
Bathsheba rose was planted next to the 'hole' as was an obelisk for the rose to climb through.
These days I've to pace myself, so I'm hoping to put an hour or so in tomorrow to form the bed around the pond, cutting away the turf. The turf was only laid last September therefore it's roots was small enough not to cause too much of a strain.
I cut down more dwarf box hedging, same as Topbird, I'm giving up and getting rid of all my box. I too, have to re-design the beds they bordered. Going to take everything out and then replant. Got three bigger box balls to dig out first!
Then after lunch, as it was still sunshiny and warmish, I cut down and dug out couch grass clumps from the Rough Patch so the crocus 'Tommies' could see the daylight. Have had to cloche them all in case the squirrels find them.
It's not the squirrels that I have to contend with, its one Blackbird who insists on digging out the crocuses I planted in Autumn. My gardening this morning has consisted of tidying up the mess made by the strong winds last night. Next doors roofing felt tiles, plant pots no idea where they came from, and branches mostly, but worse for me it's ripped off one door of my closhe ( and yes it was tied down) 😭
Removed gravel and membrane and a tree stump (small) from the north west side of the back garden.
Got some manure coming soon as the soil has been compacted over many years (Google maps shows it covered over as far back as 2009) so I’m going to put some goodness back into it.
Found a FEW bricks there!!
My new Rowan tree is going in there along with some ferns and grasses.
The right hand corner has a concrete base so not sure what to do with that yet.
I spent four hours out there today. Very tired now!
What are you going to do with the bricks The Green Man?
I planted two trugs of snowdrops in the woodland at the side of me. After lunch, I started to tackle the clematis and arch that came down in the wind last weekend. Many years of growth and thank goodness I bought the secateurs the other week. I've managed to save the main gnarled trunk, cut back all the rest. It's ready for a new arch being made and re-fixed now. I'll do that this weekend.
