Today hubby mowed both lawns, lots of edges done too. Lots of weeding ( dam you rain!) Planted up two troughs, and put in climbing frame for yesterday's sweet peas. Planted the surviving salvia from last year, will have to see what colour it is to know which one of the three. Dead headed the last of the tulips.
Every year at around this time I start to feel a bit overwhelmed by the amount to do. Probably more this year than most as still so many seedlings to go out. I found myself willing the forget-me-nots to go brown so I could hoick them out and plant up the beds and it was at that point that I had a bit of a word with myself. Made myself sit with a cup of tea and actually look at the garden - and the sea of blue - and not get up until I had drunk the entire cup of tea.
I need to learn to appreciate the changing scenes more.
Deadheaded tulips too. Dug up some ground elder and bindweed, pulled some ivy.
Then I planted out some more annuals that were ready to go into the borders, planted up some more pots, potted on the last lot of seedlings and put them out into the sun. Soon the only thing in the grow-house will be cuttings.
I also put more plant supports in place for the dahlias, sunflowers and cosmos.
I finished cutting back the overgrown hedge/honeysuckle/clematis/ivy at the back of the shed after pulling everything out of the way. Tidied it all up, dithered about what to throw away and of course just put it away again. Enjoyed dinner out on the terrace for the 2nd night running - got to be a first, with a glass or two of something cold and pink. Back twinges a bit now, so will have to take it easy tomorrow.
Know how you feel @Lizzie27 by the time I came in I couldn't stand straight. That's the problem with not being able to kneel down, the back takes it all. Still need to do some tomorrow as the raised bed still to do.
Potted on some Myrtles, did some Lavender cuttings, took dead branches out of a Viburnum, watered pots, but mostly I sat under the parasol enjoying the day.
I'm supposed to be getting a delivery of compost and top soil today so that I can fill up all the beds and containers properly and get things planted in them. Last year's cabbage plants need to be pulled up so I can plant something else there but I'm enjoying the dramatically huge display of yellow flowers and the bees seem to like it. In the meantime I need to decide where to put all of the things I have going. After last year's disappointing results I have started way too many seeds and bought too many random plants. Maybe the neighbor will like some later on.
Just in to get some shade! I'm potting on all my cuttings, plants grown from seed (still fairly mini some of them) and generally having a sort out in preparation for a plant stall our in Bloom group will be having late next week. Then sister and BIL arrive at the weekend for a visit so must have the garden ship-shape by then! They have booked a nearby self-catering apartment so that keeps things civilised and I don't have to worry about bedding/towels etc.
Planted out my actaea and the japanese anemone frilly knickers (don't judge me) that arrived today. Removed the winter bedding from the giant stone pot in the front garden and took cuttings, potted up. I'll plant the summer plants soon.
Stood for a while trying to work out how to make one of my beds less messy and floppy - I know it needs more form and structure but I can't quite work out where or how.
My compost pile is ready - I got a tumbler from our local FB group and didn't have high hopes for it but it's done really well. Only took three weeks and it's all crumbly and earthy smelling. Wondering which plants would benefit from this first batch. Put some into my pots for now.
I love colour echoes and took these pics today. The first is a geum with a heuchera, the second is a geum (different variety) with a red leaved persicaria.
