I have had to make a second batch of vegetable soup, because the cucumbers are just getting huge waiting to be picked. Luckily the Beth Alpha don't suffer any loss of flavour when they get big.
Never have I had to pick so much so early, and I was late planting this year. The only thing being slow to get going are the french beans.

@purplerallim , I was late with cucumbers 🥒 this year
Seeds wouldn’t germinate , then bought ones died but at the third attempt with plants from Ruskington they are romping away

I was a week late planting cucumber seeds, a month late putting them in the greenhouse ( mid May) but still had them ready to pick by mid June @GWRS
I do like the plants from Ruskington GC haven't had any fail on me. I like the fact that Ruskington and Anwick GC have things not available in a big commercial GC

Dove from above  (I think it was) has an excellent recipe for cucumber relish, we tried using it for the glut we had last year and it's delicious.

  • I did a two and a half hour digging stint clearing weeds etc ready to plant my flowering pea plants. I am going to "leap"? down the garden to do a second fork over and FB&B dressing, a good water and plant the peas before it gets too hot.
I also beheaded my lanky scented geraniums, pushed some bits into a pot, they may grow, or not.
Dug up my 8ft parsnip and committed it to the compost heap. Cut my first 2 globe artichokes, thought they had died.
My back finally gave up so I collapsed on the sofa and watched tennis with a cuppa.

Have just been out watering and doing the "Friday feed". Looking at the forecast for the next week l suspect there will be a lot of evening watering going on and not much physical work.
Shading is going on the greenhouse this weekend.

I spent all day weeding as I haven’t been able to garden for a couple of weeks. It never fails to amaze me how quickly weeds grow.
I accidentally stepped on a first year asparagus while gathering sweet peas. Very annoyed and I hope the asparagus will recover. Apparently you cannot harvest asparagus in their first year?

I am also trying to nurse some dying roses back to health, given to me by another mum in the village. She inherited them with the house but they were root bound and dying of thirst. Most branches have died off. It’s been a month and I am starting to see some rose buds. Feeling very satisfied at having saved them from dying.

Hydrangea in the large flower border were wilting and needed a good drink. I also planted a pot of mini rose next to it as I didn’t know what to do with mini rose given to me at a dinner party.

Researched about screening plants and trees because the house next door, purchased by a developer, are hacking all the hedges and trees down. completely changing the landscape. The mature mixed country hedge was taller than my house but it is now no taller than six ft. I am not at all pleased about how they are stripping all the characters and making such a racket all day long.

Had an hour or so digging up some Geranium "Ann Thompson", Salvia "Purple Rain" and Alchemilla mollis which I've decided were getting too dominant. Hate to waste them so I potted them up. Then I was planting some Hakonechloa, which I had in pots, in the spaces created.
