@Wilderbeast, that's interesting. Would you advise taking the lids off or taking the fleece off the sides? We are expecting cooler weather from tomorrow so I might just wait and see.

@Lizzie27 don't unwrap, the  worms always appear again and the heat is what makes the compost magic work faster. I usually only seem to get lots of worms once the bins are nearly ready for maturing and cooling down some what.

Thanks @Wilderbeast, I must confess I sometimes take worms from one bin and chuck them in another if they seem a bit sparse in any one bin. Is it true that crashing the lids back on gives them a headache?!

Is it wrong to wonder around with a coffee in only dressing gown and bare feet with a very stupid look on my face just because it's RAINING !!!! Anyway that's my happy place today. Up very early (5am) and after coffee I planted 20 Eupatorium, potted up a load of grasses, added stone to the pond beach edge and watered my basil (I was dressed properly for that). Am loving my basil never has my greenhouse smelled soooooo good 😀😀😀

Pulled out some foxgloves yesterday and the soil underneath was like a dust bowl 😕. Put the hosepipe on it for a while as any forecast rain would just bounce straight off. Forked it over and added some chicken manure pellets. The forecast rain at the moment is just enough to dampen the paving. Fingers crossed we get some more, l have 40 odd cosmos plants to go out in the front garden and the soil there is just as bad...

The blackbirds got my first strawberries @GWRS
Just had to go out and tie up the potatoes as they were being blown over. Did the same to the raspberries just in case.

Fresher and cooler, so OH and l got out in the front garden and planted over 40 cosmos "Cupcake white" and "Cupcake mix". Where the soil isn't hard as rock it's dry as dust, l was digging down over 4 inches and there was no sign of any moisture at all. OH puddled them in, then l scattered some wildflower mix seeds that we've had for years (looks like they're viable, l tried a test pot).
No idea if it will work or what it will look like, but we had to go with what we had.
Planted the leftovers I the back garden together with a few tall cornflowers grown from seed. It's all been very "ad hoc" this year.
  • A lovely cool day, with some rain. Hooray! New sow of Helianthus annuus, 'Soraya', Helianthus annuss 'Shock-o-lat', Helianthus annuus 'Ruby eclipse.' Plus Zinnia elegans 'Queen Lime', plus Zinnia elegans 'Queen red lime.' Hoping for some late summer jewels :)

Tried to dig some holes for summer bulbs in the lawn last night...perhaps a pick axe wouldve been more use than a shovel.
