    Why not?  Our pair are male and female and definitely have boy/girl characteristics accordingly.

    So it is - and we use animal epithets for certain human characteristics too - pig, bitch, cougar, snake, pussycat........

    And the former use of tom cat or tom kitten is more rarely used for felines nowadays ... it seems to be  more commonly used to refer to the behaviour of some men
