Hibernating hedgehogs

  • At last seen the hedgehog last night! Went out at 11.30pm to bring in the hog food and it was in the middle of the lawn. Put some down next to it and left it to it( don't leave food out all night as other four legged beasties about) Food gone this morning. It did appear to be of similar size to the one we lost at Christmas, so it looks like at least one sibling has survived so far. 😃

Always a relief when you see them again. No sign of any round here as yet, but l am looking out for signs.
  • I thought the warm weather during the day would bring them out @AnniD , but it's still cold at night so wasn't sure. Unless I'd seen it you wouldn't know as there is no sign it's been around this morning .

Think I'll get OH to set up the camera to see what we can see....
  • I have asked the OH for one @AnniD but didn't get one this week for my birthday, so it looks like christmas.
  • I have hinted a few times for a camera too, still waiting.  In the meantime I have stopped putting most fruit out for the two we now have visiting most nights. Still chopping up a little apple and the Wild Things hog food that we buy has dried banana incorporated in it. I don't think it will be too long before there are baby hogs around but I do hope they can wait until any chance of colder weather has passed - I would hate to know that they were giving birth after a week or two of this milder weather.
  • Well the birds around here are going hell for leather getting going with nesting @Guernsey Donkey2, so I suppose adult hogs might too. During the day today in the warm sunshine there has been swarms of bees on the snowdrops and even a red admiral butterfly on the daffodils , plus an unusual sight of a bright yellow butterfly in the hedges. As it's still so cold at night you would think they would hang on a bit.
  • I definitely have a hog that has broken hibernation, presumably due to the warm weather. He has eaten a plate of cat food (beef) two nights running now. There are tiny hog foot prints on the plate and he has left his calling card. I wonder if he will go back to sleep when it gets colder again? I intend to continue feeding him as long as he keeps eating. :)

If the weather does turn colder he probably will hibernate again. You are doing the right thing @Lancashire Lass:) Do you put out a dish of water as well?
  • We have a pond with a pebble beach that he can drink from. Our moggy has just been sniffing around the home made hog feeding station so he can tell there has been something going on!
