Hibernating hedgehogs

  • I am somewhat relieved if that is the right word that your little hog isn't eating very much now maisie_mac as neither are the one or two that are visiting our food bowl.  In fact I am disappointed that they aren't cramming the food in - the amount of energy they must use each evening in waking up, walking around the garden and hovering around the bowl but not actually eating very much at all, just a few biscuits.  I don't use meal worms just hedgehog biscuits and a little freshly chopped apple and a few halved peanuts. They don't bother eating the fresh slugs that hang about at night.

Found out tonight that each hedgehog needs to fill it's stomach twice each night to survive , on that programme on channel 5. Wow no wonder I have few slugs and snails during the summer.

And no wonder food seems to ‘pass through’ so quickly ...  :o

Been out feeding birds this morning and checked to see if hedgehog house needed more food. Some peanuts gone and others just crumbs left so something has definitely found it.
  • My neighbour and I regularly see up to 6 hedgehogs during the Spring/Summer/Autumn, each evening and now I am down to one regular and sometimes a second one, she has seen none or sometimes one recently.  We have taken 4 hogs to our rescue centre in the past month or so for one reason or another.  Although we have had temperatures of no lower than 7 in the day and 3 degrees at night, we are hoping that any remaining hogs are hibernating in a cosy and safe place. I didn't know that about hogs have to eat so much either purplerallim, we have only watched part 1 so far.  To please OH too we have to watch Billy Connolly tonight.

Ooh, exciting purplerallim ! The weather has turned colder, so your "des res" could have arrived at the right time.

I was wondering if Apples (the one that didn't make it) litter mates would be doing ok, so if they are coming it's good they have found the food. It is very cold here @Guernsey Donkey2 down to 0° this week, I really hope they are tucked up somewhere.
  • Yes, so do I purplerallim, we have been fairly lucky with the weather so far.   Hog hasn't been so far tonight and I will be bringing the food in soon too, as I do every night at this time.
I do hope that your new home soon has a hog in it - are you tempted to get a camera for next winter? I am but my neighbour has one and spends hours looking at her night time visitors on the screen - I am holding back from getting a camera, as we can see the food bowl from our lounge glass doors whilst eating our meal or watching the television in the evening..

In the summer we spend alot of time in the conservatory looking at the garden, but have only seen hogs after midnight( maybe ours have a bit of travelling to do to get to our garden) so I am thinking for next Christmas, unless hubby gets me one in Feb for birthday, a night camera would be useful.

So sorry to hear about those little ones too, makes me quite sad, even though you and other folks do their best.
Ours has not been for a while, no poops, but I still put a few fresh biscuits out in the crate in case.
I guess they must fill up a few times meandering around overnight, and as Dove said from what they leave "behind",  I thought we had two coming, but maybe ours did the rounds and fed again here a second time in the early hours as you have just mentioned second visits.

It is things like noticing a neighbour has cleared leaves from a hedge that has not been touched for months or the smoke from an obvious leaf garden clearing fire, puts me on alert a little bit thinking we might get a visit.
A small water dish against the house wall also usually stays unfrozen except on coldest nights, whereas the ones on the lawn freeze. But it gets refilled before I go to bed so would stay defrosted for a good few more hours even then.
If the hogs come you can hear it clattering against the wall :)
