    😂
  • Very smart house there, and I am sure it won't be long before you have a lodger.  We still have one or two roaming around at night, eating from the bowl of food left out for them.  I hope you will be lucky.

Just to let everyone know the hedgehog I rescued on the 23rd did not make it. Turned out to be a young female with no body fat at all , never warmed up enough to have time to re-hydrate so died that night. Very sad. Just hope if there were others in that litter they are surviving .

Very sad purplerallim, but at least you tried, and she didn't suffer any more. My local rescue took in one over Christmas that was found out during the day, sadly "Noel" didn't make it either. No question, if they are out during the day, especially at this time of year, no matter how healthy they may look, get them to a rescue ASAP.

True @AnniD Mine didn't have a mark on it and just looked cold, but with no body fat it was forced out into the cold with little hope of finding wild food. It never made it as far as my back garden where it could find food. You never know how far they have come from as surrounded by large gardens.

They are also susceptible to parasites internally, only picked up with the aid of a microscope, so it's impossible to always tell just by looking at them. They can look a reasonable size but are suffering inside. Did you see the Steve Backshall programme on Channel 5 last night @purplerallim ? It's a 3 part one about various night time creatures including our spikey friends!  :)

Yes I watched the first one @AnniD saw the hedgehogs and loved the bit about the bats. Second one tonight.
  • Sorry to read about your hogs - it is sad, poor little spikes - we must be extra vigilant at this time of year when the weather is colder.  At least you did your bit by rescuing them, they wouldn't have stood a chance left out in this colder weather.
We are aiming to watch part 1 tonight of this programme - we love nature programmes and have watched the Amazon, the Nile and tonight the Mississippi river at 9 a.m.
  • So sorry to hear about little spikes. I still have at least one coming most nights. Hopefully s/he will make it through to the spring. S/he isn’t eating very much so a handful of cat biscuits lasts 2-3 nights. It always surprises me when I check the feeding station daily to see how much food has gone. My feeeding station is so cosy I’m amazed they don’t nest in it. Videoing the tv series so will sit down and enjoy soon.
