That’s ok if you have paid for a decent anti spyware, if not they do update their protection as well as other rubbish. I wouldn’t miss an update on my iPad.

I've not installed a microsoft update in about 6 years,so far so good. Hubby's laptop is often ground to a halt whilst endless updates are installed.

When I bought my first iPod, it came with a software disc. After years of Apple updates I realised that every one made it harder for me to copy music which I hadn't actually bought from iTunes.
I uninatalled iTunes ( inc all updates ) and reinstalled my original disc . I could copy whatever I wanted.

Yes Apple a renowned for this, we have an obsolete Mac because it has the old non-intel chip in it & the later software won't work with it.

The cynic in me wants to use the term " built in obsolescence" but surely Apple wouldn't do that?

99.9% of companies do built-in obsolescence.  It's standard procedure these days.  How else to keep us buying the newer versions?   We had to buy a new freezer recently because the door seal went on the old one which was otherwise in perfect working order.   Door seals are not available as spare parts.  madness.

I shutdown my PC at the end of every day too but it asks me if I want to shutdown and update or update and restart.  I usually choose the latter to save time because, usually, it does the updates when you restart and not as it shuts down.

  • There was a feature on the radio yesterday about moves (from the EU)  to make all products more easily repairable again. Too many things are sealed so you can even open them to see whats wrong. Too many products, household white goods being a prime example, are thrown away because it's cheaper to buy new than repair or update.

  • Many years ago when I left school I was an apprentice Electrician we use to repair all sorts of small items then irons, toasters, kettles, rings on cookers oven elements and simmer-stats etc . You could get all the parts and the cost of labour was acceptable.

But as time went on and materials and labour got more expensive and items got cheaper eventually one took over the other and we became a throw away economy  :'(

We paid a visit to the tip earlier this week (mostly getting rid of a few, ahem, wine bottles). There were fridge freezers that looked only a few years old, and tvs the same. Of course it may well be that they have packed up, but the guy l spoke to who works there reckoned that there was probably nothing wrong with 95% of them.
