A few years ago I glossed all the skirtings and architraves on one floor of the house. We kept the windows open to clear the smell and it seemed ok. Then my wife lit some candles a few days later and they all had a strong parafin smell to them. She thought they were cheap candles but apparently it was a reaction to the remaining paint fumes in the air. You couldn't smell the fumes until the candles were lit though. I use low VOC gloss now, it doesn't work quite as well but it beats getting a lung full of noxious fumes.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
Anyway my reason to be grumpy today is I took the day off and planned to head to Hay on Wye for a day out. It turns out though that half of Hay is shut on Tuesdays. I still got some good books though and it beats a day in work so I can't really complain.

I had the 'everything is shut' experience in Cyprus many years ago. After my first dip in the pool I discovered that my brand new waterproof watch wasn't. Asked at reception where I could buy a watch and headed directly there, following the instructions given. That took me up a track which mountain goats would have difficulty with but I got there. That's when I discovered that all the shops were shut on that day of the week. I wasn't happy although I did enjoy the 'adventure' on the way.
When I moved down to England years ago, my furniture was arriving on the Saturday and the plan was to unpack and get the house sorted and I would then shop on the Sunday for food etc. Only to find on the Sunday that all the shops were shut! Back in Scotland, all the food shops opened on a Sunday, so I was a very disgruntled ex-pat at that point in time! And a very hungry one!

@wild edges I guess that was my point the low VOC paints now are a great improvement but some of the other cleaning products are worse, and I am not talking about things like white spirit. @Hampshire_Hog It has been said by others but I think we are all in an endless "Groundhog Day"
Can anybody really sort the B***** mess? There seem to be three main groups with totally different requirements before they will agree to vote for it. 1) Hard line exit who want a complete and total break 2) hard line remain who want everything to stay as it was 3) The majority of those in the middle who just want it over with. Unless we can bring Solomon back from the dead I don't see how any resolution which will be acceptable to a majority can be found.
It was the late eighties @Lyn . Moved back to Scotland after 8 years - which was always part of the deal. Have been using the low VOC paint now for a few years. It is a joy to use.
