They access another dimension through a wormhole in your washing machine. This is caused by a vortex created by the fast spin cycle.

I don't think the Xmas tree sock ever made it to the washing machine.  I'd only worn that pair once.

Terry Pratchett suggested that all airing cupboards are linked and that socks are able to travel anywhere in the world. Perhaps yours got travel sick and bailed out before it got further than the window. The other one got away and is now confusing someone by appearing in their clean laundry while they stare at it, muttering "I don't remember ever buying that and where has my other blue sock gone?"

That is an excellent theory except we have no airing cupboard.........   Maybe it works with laundry baskets tho.

Lost socks are reincarnated as tupperware lids that don't seem to fit anything.

HW - haven't seen either of our two cats hunting socks but possible I suppose.

WE - I recently bought a set of 5 "nesting" tupperwares for food storage.  I now have 5 lids and 4 bottoms..............

I've been trying to go to bed for about half an hour now but my computer has decided it wants to do updates and won't let me shut it down safely. Every time I think it's done it restarts itself and does some configuring. Why can't computers ask if they want to do this? I'm sure it can wait until the morning :|

I've blocked my laptop from "automatic updates" I'm sure they're more for the convenience of Microsoft than for me
