"Exactly" those people deserving awards get the crumbs and those doing the job they chose to do, getting well paid for it get the top awards. I will just go and chew another hole in the carpet, when asked I blame the dog. Frank
At least Alison Saunders, who had to quit as head of the CPS due to all the cock-ups, didn't get anything. Most unusual at that level not to get something irrespective of how bad they have been at their job.
Isn't the salary the reward? I think the main problem is their motivation might have been the money rather than the desire to do well. Not always true of course but often the well paid people who do the best are the shameless self-promoters who can talk their way into good jobs rather than the hard workers who keep their heads down and get on with the job.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
What a curmudgeonly lot you are. There are people at all levels of society who do admirable things which deserve recognition and others, as we all know, who get positions, promotion, salaries etc depending on who they are and who they know. It was ever thus and the whole "titles" thing has been utterly devalued since Lloyd George was so brazen in selling them they had to bring in an Act. The next PM to be associated with a scandal for selling honours was that lovely chap Tony "Bliar" Blair.

As I said earlier, in my view well paid figures in the public eye should not be getting honours simply by virtue of their profile. Great sportspeople, writers, actors, entertainers, musicians, business leaders etc have risen to the top through virtue of great talent, hard work and luck. Mostly they are then paid extremely well. I see no virtue in further rewarding them with knighthoods and so on. And yes, I include June Whitfield in this. From what I have read she was utterly charming and all spoke well of her, but the same is true of 92 year old Betty in our village and there’s no damehood for her. True, Betty hasn’t bought pleasure to millions but neither has she (I guess) been paid millions.
I would reserve honours for those who have used their fame to bring significant help to others. In the international arena you think of people like Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Barbara Bush. Domestically, I would have honoured Kenny Dalglish for the superb support he gave to those bereaved by the Hillsborough tragedy, to J K Rowling for charitable work, to Nicki Minaj for the support she gives to impoverished in India, to Tony Adams for supporting other sportsmen and women who have succumbed to addiction and hundreds and hundreds more ... but not to Twiggy or Michael Palin etc unless they are more altruistic than is commonly known.
I'd like to see more people stripped of title personally. If Sir Ian Botham wants to use his privileged position to make uninformed attacks on animal welfare charities to further his own hunting focused adjenda then I see that as abuse of the title. He certainly offers no apology when he's accusations are proven to be false.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
Does no one who earns a good salary, deserve an award?
I don't think the Honours system should be for rewarding somebody simply for doing their day job. It should be acknowledgement of work above and beyond that. Unfortunately far too many are simply gifts to cronies.
