The only time I ever put out "food waste" is when we have a chicken carcass. Everything else is either eaten, or composted
It's rare for us too. Christmas is different in that we have 'open house' and can never be certain how many will turn up. It's mainly uneaten food from that which went in the caddy. I can't remember last time I used it. Plenty of other people put them out every week so the quantity collected and used for whatever purpose will be substantial. Everybody doesn't have a compost heap, or a garden for that matter, so there will be some food waste in most households at times.
The bulk of my landfill is cat litter (3 cats). Some of it could be put down the loo but I am worried about it clogging the pipes up. And it would take me forever to put a scoop in, flush and repeat umpteen times.

Cat poo goes down the loo Hogweed and the rest goes on the compost heap - or did when we first got our new kitties. They are both big enough now to go outside so no more cat lit here and they don't go in the neighbours' gardens as one lot have a very fast dog and the others have 500 cattle, several big farm cats and no garden.
No food waste collections here, nor garden waste, but anything plastic involved in packaging is collected in one big wheelie bin and everything else in the other small wheelie bin. Collection are alternate weeks but we rarely need to empty them more than once a month. Paper, cardboard, bottles, batteries, broken electrical stuff, fats and oils get taken to the recycling centre.
Now for the grump. Possum came home for Xmas and NY with a cold which she has kindly shared with me. Bit of a shock to the system and feeling utterly cr*p. Humph!

"food waste" for us = peelings, tea bags etc, Nothing which can be eaten is ever dumped. Like @Lyn, if we're only going to eat 2 potatoes, that's all we cook. If there are "leftovers" they get eaten later. I deliver to customers every week and I know there's no way on this earth they're eating all that food every week. I hate to think what they dump.

My parents are guilty of this. Every time they go on holiday I pop over and check their fridge because they leave perfectly good food in there to go off. Once they went away for a couple of weeks and left half a bottle of wine. Who wastes wine?! I swear I'm adopted.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

When we had our holiday let, we told guests to leave any foodin the fridge if they were planning on throwing in the bin. I've no shame.
No food waste in this house either, it gets frozen for use in a stew or soup at a later date if not straightaway. we are lucky in the town we have recycling for just about everything from clothes to obscure plastics that cant go in the council recycling.
Unfortunately as we live in a flat grey water etc is not recycled but we do have solar and voltaic panels all over the roof.
Indoors we also have a loo flushing motto if it's yellow let it mellow if its brown flush it down, not that we leave it around for days obviously but it's only water after all.
