........ On the down side, the garden soil gets a generous mulch of lead shot every winter. And they keep shooting the phone line, which does nothing to improve internet speeds.
Just to reassure you on one point at least ... the shot in UK cartridges doesn’t contain lead nowadays
I'm sure it must be of great comfort to the birds to know they've been hit up the backside with something environmentally friendly. :-)
Re lead shot: The law in England the lead shot regulations ban the use of lead shot over all foreshore, over specified SSSIs, and for the shooting of all ducks, geese, coot and moorhen, wherever they occur.
Lead shot is used in most other cases.
There also needs to be a distinction between lead shot as used in guns and lead shot in fishing the two should not be confused.
Against popular belief that lead shot is banned in fishing this is not so lead shot of certain sizes can still be used in fishing and most shot found in water birds is fishing shot.
I shoot and fish and keep to all the regulations, but as with all things in life we have the minority that have to be different.

I used to love fishing when I was younger but the minority has ruined it for me and I see the minority becoming more like the majority all the time. No concern for the fish, littering, damaging habitats and wildlife. Some ponds are so over stocked and over fished now that the fish are unhealthy and the water quality is disgusting.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
I remember fishing as a child in the nearby burn with a bamboo cane, some of my dads fishing line tied on to it and worm on a hook. I used to do it every summer and only caught one little trout! My dad used to go trout and salmon fishing and I always thought later on I would like to do it but only if I didn't catch anything! Time was a ticket for the Findhorn River (salmon and trout) was only £12 a year!

@wild edges I total agree about lakes and ponds some places allow you to put ground bait in for days before you fish and it's not just the odd hand full it's kilos of the stuff most of it must sit on the bottom and rot reducing the oxygen levels and so destroying plant and the whole biology of the water system.
Since we move to the coast I do a lot more sea fishing but still have our two weeks in Kelso fishing the Tweed.

The water bailiffs where friends used to fish when I were young frowned upon people blanket baiting and words were had if you were found catapulting piles of boilies into the lakes.
@AnniD I do not like being a killjoy but strongly agree fireworks by arrangement or public display only would be a good start. I also cannot understand with all the fuss and over protection these days it's not been stopped. Putting children at risk bla bla obviously not
In the diet season, I would like to point out: Your body is not a dustbin
If you eat food so as not to waste it, it will end up in the water courses or in the sea. If you waste it by not eating it, it will end up in landfill or in the sea.
However, if an animal has given its life to satisfy your appetite, you are morally bound not to waste it.
Funny, exactly what the cabbage screamed at me as i sliced it up with a big knife and dropped it in boiling water, we are all life. It went well with my prime steak though. Frank.
Well the soup made of the leftovers from our new years eve meal has just finished boiling. I think we squeezed every drop out of nutrition of that poor animal. The inedible remains will soon be whisked off to the waste to energy incinerator plant up the road to keep the lights on. I don't know what they do with the ash though since it's probably mixed in with plastics and all kinds of toxic stuff when they burn it. Perhaps they have a separate furnace for food waste and the ash gets composted after but I doubt it.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
I just had to look it up, not read all the details yet. But some of that ash gets used in the construction industry apparently. Little link if you are interested.
