Exactly ! Midnight, not 11pm. I sit there muttering in a curmudgeonly fashion "Can't these people tell the time ?"  ;)

Obviously not around here. They have started already.

I was sat up till 2:30am keeping the baby asleep through the fireworks. The neighbours launched a full display at my roof again and the cars are covered in chemical ash this morning. It makes you wonder how toxic the fireworks debris is and how much ended up in my veg beds too.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

we don't have trouble with fireworks. I could just about see some, a few miles away. But we do get the pheasant shoot. On the plus side, they don't do it at random odd times or, generally, in the middle of the night (apart from when the gamekeeper is out shooting rabbits). On the down side, the garden soil gets a generous mulch of lead shot every winter. And they keep shooting the phone line, which does nothing to improve internet speeds.

I used to find the odd "Rocket stick " in the garden, and they came in quite useful. We had quite a few going off until about quarter to one. They seem to go bang (pause) bang (pause) bang (pause) bangbangbangbang. That is the best description that l can come up with ! They just seem so loud - l got up to have a look, and they were some distance away,  l would see the flash and then a loud bang would follow a couple of seconds later. I can't imagine they'd contain anything toxic @wild edges, they are probably subject to strict guidelines. Unless your neighbours are making their own, of course.......

Sad thing is on New years Eve we used to be able to hear folks all around calling and cheering.
We are inland but could hear the boats in the local harbours whoops and fog horns and the big guns the only bangs for a few moments .
It meant something and was atmospheric.

All we can hear now is a barrage of fireworks, makes me sad for the wildlife and birds that must get scared.

Makes me very curmudgeonly now. Right ruddy misery I am.

And we can't go out as we have pets who are scared of the blasted fireworks.
Been going off at what seems like random times the last few days, still some more this past hour.
    Grumble grumble.

That is the other thing isn't it Ruby, they don't just go off on New Year's Eve. They will be going off randomly for the next few nights, just as they do around 5th November. When you think how much the powers that be are forever lecturing us about what we eat, drink, health and safety etc, etc., l can't believe that they still allow something as dangerous as fireworks to be sold to members of the public. I strongly believe that they should be restricted to professional displays. Some friends of ours have a seven/eight week old puppy, l really hope she wasn't terrified last night.

Just to reassure you on one point at least ... the shot in UK cartridges doesn’t contain lead nowadays  :)

It shouldn't but a lot still does. Thousands of wildfowl in the uk still die from ingesting lead shot every year.

It's only banned for shooting wetland birds, and in SSSIs. They are allowed to use lead shot to shoot pheasants away from rivers and lakes.

  • Ah yes the fireworks we have been getting random loud explosions at all times of the day & night for the past 2 weeks. Really loud bang enough to rattle double gazing! Then anything from 30-60 mins later another one, seems to be a trend now. It happens here near home and near the allotments.
