I'll be doing my own mini garden bird watch tomorrow to mark the New Year along with the obligatory flowering plant count. I'm looking forward tk the official count in late January though. I assume it will be the last weekend as usual.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

60+ birds of 13 species on New Year's day. I have trouble counting the sparrows but there's 30-40 at least. Numbers of smaller birds are down because they can't get on the seed feeder with so many sparrows crowding it.

I have the opposite way round, a flock of or should that be a charm of Goldfinches about 30 all fighting for the hanging feeders and the sparrows crowding out the ground feeders.
  • Is it just me or do others find, I always seem to pick the wrong hour! lots of birds before and after but hey ho. As an aside we seem to have seen an unusual number of Jays around this year, both in the garden & on the allotments, usually hardly see them seeing them every day at the moment.

I took part in the garden birdwatch a couple of years ago and very little showed up but at the moment sparrows, finches and tits seem to be everywhere, they're having a great time chasing each other, swooping, chattering, I bet on the birdwatch day they all stay indoors.

Results showing zero birds are just as important as ones showing lots of birds though. For the science to work properly they need both kinds of results.
