RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch

  • Last week, about 4 one afternoon, my daughter called me into the front room to watch a barn owl that was moving between the fence posts in  our neighbour's field. Very early for that, though we've seen one regularly fly from our sycamores further down into the sheep field at dusk. Perhaps the snow was affecting the number of available rodents.
Not expecting such luck for the birdwatch :)

@wild edges  did you order from Amazon or similar? They seem to take ages.
No I used my regular bird food supplier, one of the ones who offer a discount through the GW magazine. They're normally fairly good at delivery but terrible in letting you know when things will arrive. I got the DHL email this morning saying they will be with me just after lunch and the dispatch notice email from the company only came an hour before the parcel.

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

I also found that our local supplier was loads cheaper than Amazon for all kinds of bird seed, much to my surprise. It’s much better to see what you’re buying first as well.
Carmarthenshire (mild, wet, windy). Loam over shale, very slightly sloping, so free draining. Mildly acidic or neutral.

  • I only ever use Amazon as a last resort,  if I can't find something elsewhere.

I recently bought some bird food from wilko, the fattballs in particular are very popular and the prices are very reasonable. 🐦

My birds are completely ignoring the fat balls. They are much more interested in the wild bird food, peanuts and sunflower hearts.

Just done my Birdwatch! I made a video to send to my neice who is doing her’s too. They are going to a woodland stream round the corner from where they live to do there’s - hoping to see a Kingfisher. Ambitious.

It is light rain here plus a cat was about towards to start so I don’t think I saw as much as possible but still a good list - nothing rare and a flock of jackdaws half way through maybe scared others away. Typically, right at the end some coal and blue tits appeared to investigate the food I put up in the large Acer tree. The highlight was a robin singing for ages - I zoomed in with the binoculars.

Enjoyed it anyway - better submit results now.

Wow. After a summer of blue tit pairs, goldfinches and greenfinches, we've had a very quiet winter despite an increase in amount and variety of food on offer. We only had a wood pigeon, blue tit, dunnock and blackbird. The occasional starlings did not grace us with their presence and the resident song thrush has moved on having stripped the Rowan tree. I'd love to have had an hour like yours.
