Climbing Rose varieties - opinions and suggestions

Mr. Vine EyeMr. Vine Eye Posts: 2,394
Hello, I'm planning to order a couple of bare root roses to plant this Autumn. I'm going to plant them at either end of our extension and train them to grow up and across the long front wall and side wall.

these two aspects are South and East facing and both get at least 6 hours.

ive been trying to choose the two varieties but finding it difficult. I've never grown roses before.

i have been looking on the David Austin website and I searched for Disease resistant and looked at highly recommended and/or RHS AGM varieties. From that list I liked the look of Teasing Georgia (warm yellow colour) and The Generous gardener (light pink).

i also liked the look of The Pilgrim (pale yellow) and no AGM but I quite like the look of Crown Princess Margareta (apricot/peach).

Id like two that compliment each other and are reliable.

I'd welcome any suggestions or opinions.

thanks very much

Just a personal thing, but I prefer to see 'The Generous Gardener' with a colour other than yellow... and all the other 3 are yellow/apricot colours... so my preference is for a deeper pink to go with that rose..

With the others, again I wouldn't pair any of those as they are too similar... if I was growing say 'Teasing Georgia', I would want a contrasting colour, like purple...

    Just my tuppence worth...

What height and width measurements are you looking for? what kind of space do you have on your walls?...

I have grown Teasing Georgia and loved it so will be getting one for this new garden.  It doesn't get as long or high as The Generous Gardener which is a very soft pink so I agree with Marlorena, not a good pairing colourwise.   Both very good roses tho.  I don't know the other two.

  • I have Rosa 'Gardener's Glory' and can thoroughly recommend it, if you want a trouble free yellow rose. It flowers beautifully all through the summer and does not suffer from black spot, even out here in the countryside. (Another rose bought at the same time is leafless every summer!)

    Thanks for your responses.

has anyone grown A Shropshire Lad? That looks like a very attractive colour, peachy pink with a fruity tea scent.

I managed to find a photo online of Shropshire Lad and Teasing Georgia - I think they look very nice together like that.

They're likely to end up next to each other with a small gap between rather than actually intermingling.

I prefer the more subtle hues as I find the strong colours quite garish on roses.

I can't find any other rose colours that are complimentary types (looking at the colour wheel). I could always grow a clematis up into them with a contrasting colour.

The thing about Teasing Georgia is its buds can be pinky red until they open and eventually fade through amber to a creamier yellow.   You could certainly grow a good purple, viticella clematis (easy pruning and care when growing in roses)  that would lift the colour of both roses and mingle beautifully.

Be aware that roses and clematis are hungry, thirsty plants so prepare the soil well, keep them watered till established and feed and mulch every year.  Cracking plants tho.

Two lovely roses, and I'm going against my own advice as I grow pink and yellow roses together like that, although they are stronger colours than what you find on 'The GG', which is a pale blush pink...
If you are happy with it, then go for it...  I'm sure you'll be delighted..

...I meant to say that's a gorgeous yellow rose you have, and probably one of Christopher Warner's best efforts... 'Open Arms' is another of his along with 'Eye Of The Tiger' and 'For Your Eyes Only' those with a blotch in the middle, and a marvellous ground cover rose called 'Centre Stage'...  I have one of his, 'Lilac Bouquet', and he breeds quite a few that unfortunately do not get released in this country...     whilst 'Gardener's Glory' is not to my personal taste, it's amazing how he got such a fine yellow climber by crossing a floribunda with a miniature...

I meant to show you 'The Generous Gardener' in my own garden, so you can see the colour and how it looks in early years... mine has  now left the obelisk and is venturing towards a nearby arch across some rope, as it is quite a vigorous climbing rose.. I grow it with a deeper pink rose, and you can see in the 2nd picture from a different angle, bits of a yellow climber top left, to give you an idea..

photos from June, I'm afraid my rose garden doesn't quite look like this right now...

...as you can see, I do grow yellow and pink roses together...

  • Malorena can I ask how long your roses have been growing? We recently moved to a new house and I planted a Shropshire lad and crown princess margaretta either side of a rose arch. Colour is entirely subjective, there are no rules, just go with what makes you happy!
