Hosta - she was very annoying - the wife - wasn't she! I slightly disagree about the glass though. I think they had plenty where it mattered. It gets difficult transporting and fitting, and the expense etc. I was surprised they didn't have it single storey though, but perhaps that would have been too expensive with the groundworks. They seriously underestimated that cost! I reckoned from the start it would be roughly 100 grand anyway. The guys were so laid back building it though weren't they?  :D
The chap who was presenting most of it, Aidan Keane, died after they made the series. They had a little dedication at the end of the first prog. He was only 49.  :(

    Hi all.
BIL and partner turning up for the weekend, which will be fun, and probably rather alcoholic.

@Fairygirl, I don't know how well you remember the sitting room, but I'd have had the woodburner where they had the table with the lamp on it, between the two windows. Their armchairs were facing the woodburner/ blank wall and not the windows / views.
I stopped it just as it ended. The poor chap: 49!! Eek.

Fairy, love the hog house!!!! I'm sure it will get rave reviews! My time is running out and I'm always at work so my part time working colleague has offered to make me a little shelter until I get round to having time, sub contracted the first build, it's a cop out but hogs needs must come first!
Chicky sounds like you will be a local in oz by the time your family have finished education! How lovely!!! 😊

I have loads of Grand design programmes recorded, if I ever win the lottery, I will have our house built 😁, we shall keep wishing hey.
That, in a nutshell, is the problem with Grand Designs. Self building is generally cheaper than buying a house already built. More stressful, for sure, and there's the problem of where you live while it's being built, but if you have the will to do it, it's not a Lottery win type deal. It's only because the self aggrandising nutters that like to go on Grand Designs insist on building everything out of hand knapped flint or the hides of unicorns on a site overlooking the South Downs or St Paul's Cathedral that the buildings on there cost so much. There is absolutely nothing to say you can't buy a small plot in almost any provincial town in the UK for under 100k and have a nice house, built to your preferred layout, for less than £1500/m2. So a good sized 3 bed house for what - £110k maybe? Under 250k all in. Which, at least in the south of England, is dirt cheap.

We used to get people asking us all the time why we didn't put our own house build forward for Grand Designs. I would say it has more in common with Catweezle's Den than a Grand design. And OH would say it's stressful enough doing it without Eeyore McLeod turning up every few weeks predicting doom and failure.
