Just because you don't like football @Obelixx, there are plenty of us, who are not stupid, who do :)
How can you lie there and think of England
When you don't even know who's in the team

Thats intreauging, couldnt find any reference to football.Hello punckdoc, hope you are well.Been a very busy 3 days, youngest daughter to software conference in Manchester, stayed at hers to kid sit, they have various after school "stuff" which means collecting one at 3.15, the other at 4.15, had to come home (80 mile  plus round trip) to walk the dogs, open greenhouses, water, still lots to catch up on, plus MY washing, going to sit and watch TV with a cuppa, think I deserve it!

That's my fault ... I sent my commiserations to @punkdoc this morning as THFC (Spurs) were comprehensively beaten by the genius that is Lionel Messi and Barcelona ... one can only feel sympathy for Spurs ... it seems that no team of mere mortals were likely to beat Barca last night.

Pdoc - OH and our friend are not stupid but I find football is these days.  One top player receiving more in a week than most of the fans can earn in a couple of years and supporters entry fees not even needed for the top clubs' finances cos of TV deals?  Definitely something stupid about that!

Friend is Yorkshire and supports Sheffield United but loathes Wednesday.  I told him when I was student my boyfriend took me to the Stretford End when MU were at home and M City the other weeks.  Manchester born so supported both teams.  OH found that reasonable.  Friend doesn't.  I find the tribal partisanship stupid too.

Tiler's chap is doing well.  Shower walls done.  Floor started.  Tomorrow he'll finish the floor and skirting tiles and then Monday grouting.  The joys of planning and scheduling.

    Afternoon all.
I don't "get" sport at all.
Playing, fine, I get that bit, watching someone you personally know, fine, I get that. Complete strangers running round a track, swimming up and down, riding a bike up and down hills, nope, I've no idea why anyone cares. One will win, the rest will lose.I'm sure they all trained very hard, and they all really, really wanted to win, but I don't care if it's person X or person Y,and I don't understand why anyone else does TBH.
The thing I hate most about football is the tribal rivalry:
    Celtic and Ranger
    Hibs and Hearts
    Liverpool and Everton
    Newcastle and Sunderland
    Man U and Man C
    The list is endless.
It seems to me if you support team A, you are expected to hate team B. I have no idea why.

Lots of folk enjoy it hugely and that's fine , but if it was all stuck on one channel on TV and I never heard a thing about it ever again, I'd be a very happy bunny.

The same can be said for opera, rock music, ballet, athletics etc etc etc.  Football is a business like any other ... we all know what top lawyers, tv presenters, bankers, business people etc earn ... it's immoral and totally out of kilter with how the world ought to be.  Doesn't make it any less exciting/enjoyable to watch ... and doesn't mean that the fans approve of how things are and aren't lobbying to change things.

"...It seems to me if you support team A, you are expected to hate team B. I have no idea why...."

Some teams' fans are like that ... and it's not about football, it's tribal ... the Celtic/Rangers thing especially ... not all football fans are like that.  I follow Ipswich and live in Norwich ... local rivals ... I've not been tarred and feathered and drummed out of town yet

I certainly don't wish to detract from the enjoyment folk get from it, but I tire of folk "expecting" me to be excited about Olympics / World cup etc.
"Oh, but it's our national team " they say
" Do you care about our national chess team, or formation dance team, or water polo team, or flower aranging team?"
    "erm, no, not really"
"I'm the same about all sport"
Now we're all supposed to be loving women's football/ cricket etc, but look at the stadia: there's hardly anyone there.

So why wag the finger at any mention of football on here whereas we seem to be able to discuss opera and rock music without being derided?

@Hostafan ...  I for one don't expect you to get excited about sport ... the very thought of that is absolutely ridiculous ;)  (and I can't bear boxing either).

I cannot for the life of me see what pleasure some people get out of golf and motor racing ... but I don't call folk stupid for doing it .... some people seem to rearrange their lives around the Formula 1 pre-race practice laps but it leaves me cold    and it's not as if I don't get vehicle racing ... I used to work at a Hot Rod garage and a great friend was a hugely successful international speedway rider when he was younger ... I just don't get Formula 1 .......... and if you're talking about stupidity and the paypackets of the individuals concerned ..... ???

So why this knee jerk reaction on here whenever football is mentioned ... I just don't get it
