Good evening. I just heard the lovely soft hooting sound of an owl outside, which I often hear, but there was another call...a more screeching, harsh call...it must be a male and female tawny owl calling each other. How exciting! Do they start ‘courting’ at Autumn?? I thought breeding was after Winter??
I haven’t heard that female before - I just checked the sounds on the ‘web’ and it’s definitely the ‘kewick’ of the female tawny and the ‘hoo hoo’ of the male. I hope they are enjoying my garden anyway.
Honeymoon?? I am really chuffed to hear them. I officially live in a city, but we do have plenty of trees in and around my house, plus some woodlands just a short fly away. I was worried when some extremely tall pine trees were removed from the house behind me 2 years ago, it would make the squirrels and larger birds homeless - so it’s great to see/hear so much wildlife still thriving.
Morning 😁. Glad to see my beach huts provoked such entertaining conversation 😜
Sounds like you had a good time in Ireland Liri - pain about the phone tho. Love tawny owls AuntyRach 🦉. We certainly hear more twit-twooo-ing in February than the rest of the year, but get the odd burst all year round. They do a good blood curdling scream too 🙀
Good morning. Up before the sun today cos we're expecting the tiler. Now it's getting light but it's grey and cloudy and very fresh. Set to get sunny and 20C later tho so that's OK. Off to the fish and farmers' market at Les Sables d'Olonne then lunch and a stroll on the beach.
We have tawny and barn owls here but heard and not seen. I shall be putting up nesting boxes at some point tho, just in case because some scrubland not too far away is to be flattened for quarry expansion and they may need new roosting spots. Loads of noisy small birds congregating in the mimosa last night as the sun set.
More coffee needed now and then the next stage in grape jelly. Have a lovely day everyone and a pox on all lurgies - slept badly last night between a sore throat and the pesky neck and shoulder aches.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

Hope everyone’s had a restful night.
A dry calm morning is arriving here ... and the first coffee of the morning is here too ...
