Old wives tales and home remedies.

The reason for starting this is I want to know if anyone has any old remedies that have come down over the years for treating a wart. nothing to smelly I hope !! or involving any strange ritual late at night !!

I have just one common wart appeared from nowhere in the last week on my wrist  :) had it confirmed this morning by the local chemist who then wanted to sell me some freezing potion at £23.00  :o I said I think I will live with it and left.

Also would be interested in any other old wives tales / remedies people have heard or tried over the years.

I will start with two:

1. To treat verrucas on feet put banana skins in a plastic bag and wear next to the skin.  This I know works as a colleague at work tried it and within a few weeks was cured.

2. For gout mashed up cabbage leaves wrapped around the foot, never tried it so can't say if it works or not.

Warts drop off on their own you’ll look down one day and it will be gone.

I use comfrey for warts, an infusion in a poultice. Works best on softer skin but will work on leather backed hands like mine as well.

(I used to be an old wife, do I still qualify?)

I got a bit of glass stuck in my finger while cleaning the greenhouse and the wound kept flaring up for months after. Someone suggested it might have turned into a wart so I used cider vinegar on it and it turned black and dropped off very rapidly. I've not had a problem with it since. I just put a couple of drops on some toilet roll and bound it over the wound with tape. There's probably better instructions on-line though.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

When I worked in the bank at age 20 we had a gypsy come in and curse my colleagues wart by saying " I viggy thee I Viggy thee " whilst holding her hand . Cant for the life of me remember if it worked but we certainly looked forward to her weekly visits.

I had a verruca on my big toe and I went to Outpatients and they froze the toe and I watched as the nurse dug it out with a big scalpel.

    Are they 'Hogwarts' @Hampshire Hog ?!  😅😂
  • Lyn I know I have had the odd one before and as you say they just die  but this one is annoying so I thought I might give it a helping hand :)

Mrs Glaze was not me with the banana skins but a colleague at work he just put them and his foot in a plastic bag and wore inside his shoe and within a few weeks they were gone. apparently the nurse who was treating him was amazed.

herbaceous I will give that a go thanks.

Wild edges Cider vinegar sounds good I have a glass each morning. Hope I don't turn black and drop off :/ If herbaceous 's remedy doesn't  work I will try yours next.

NewBoy2 I had a similar experience years ago but the doc burnt mine out with a thing that looked like a soldering iron.

Jules41 I like that maybe they are  :D

My niece picked dandelion leaves every day and rubbed wart with them. Must be fresh so plenty of "juice" wart disappeared but maybe would have gone anyway.

That's just it you use all these expensive medications but at the end of the day they do just die naturally, that's why I didn't buy anything and thought I would put up a post for ideas, then thought why just my wart? why not anything that may help others and not just medical stuff.

There must be hundreds if not thousands of tips that have been handed down over the years.

I don't really 'do' chemicals @Hampshire Hog a fact which has irritated my family for ever. Of course I accept medical help but only when absolutely necessary and the only time I visit a chemist is for sticking plasters (every gardeners friend) and echinacea tablets.

I manage with herbs and don't really bother the local GP. Maybe I'm just lucky with my health although this heat has caused quite a few issues.
