Looked up the site and it looks like I'll be getting my pop socks out.😁 plus maybe a teepee. Will I have enough summer left to get it to fruition. Also should I restrict how many I allow to grow on each plant( sure I remember something about it on another thread).

I usually allow three per plant and pinch out the stems three leaves beyond the last fruit.

I'm sure some people grow more fruit per plant, but whenever I've grown butternut squash they're usually a bit later than I hope they will be.

  • It is a squash - Dove is correct with that, and we grow them too, usually up to 6 per plant however our plants are horizontal on the soil, so no weight problems.  I nip off the main shoot once I feel we have enough squash on the plant otherwise the shoot will just extend longer and longer and the excess squash won't mature and continue to remove all male flowers too.  You will need good, strong support for the squash purple - tights, pop socks, flexible netting etc. or you can purchase something similar to melon supports (same family of plants).  Keep us posted.

Been doing more research and on the RHS
site found that not only is there a Jenner courgette but also a Jenner squash! Both listed and the squash type is strong upright habit. Fancy calling two similar plants by the same name! No wonder someone got it wrong. It could have been at the seed stage or the growing on and labelling point that the mix up happened.

Well it does seem that’s probably the mystery solved ... but as you say, it’s a mistake waiting to happen.

Second plant has now produced a fruit. Ment to ask do the flowers need pollinating to just produce fruit or is that only if you want seed.

They won't produce fruit without pollination, but the insects should do it, don't think there's a need for you to do it.

As I said each plant has one fruit so I should keep on keeping on and hope the season lasts and the plants hold up.😁

Yes, I'd just let them get on with it ... some tomato feed would be good if you're not feeding them yet (can't remember if you said you are ... sorry)
