Oh Steephill ... that makes me yearn for the Southwest .... that's the problem with having had our annual holiday in May ... we've already booked next year's, but it's a long while to wait ...

Wonky's van doesn't look very old at all, but I think it's a pretty basic model ... it is an agricultural firm after all.  They seem very good and do appear to try to look after her ... this isn't our usual summer weather after all ...

I'm feeling very virtuous  o:) not only have I done my best to attract some rain clouds by hanging a line of jeans out in the garden, but I've taken advantage of the day being slightly cooler and dusted and polished downstairs and waxed and buffed the floors and given the big hide rug a good shake and airing in the garden ... a beautiful green female Hawker dragonfly came in to inspect and got entangled in the blinds so I've rescued her as well ... I deserve a mug

Salcombe is beautiful. I had an unfortunate experience there when 8 months pregnant, in a boat running out of fuel, too strong a current for rowing to achieve anything, other boats trying to help but failing and the lifeboat people going past pointing and laughing at our predicament. It was funny in hindsight, though scary at the time. It has somewhat overshadowed anything else in my memories of Salcombe!

Still a lovely breeze here :)

What's Wonky to do in winter then?  Pack a hot water bottle?  Thermals?  Ski gear to do deliveries?

LG - RNLI boat going by laughing?  That's not good.  I'd have been furious.

Have just seen Thirlmere on Beeb news.  Half empty!  This is the lake whose overflow one autumn I was there drowned my car engine as I rounded a corner with no advance warning of flooding.   Ever tried telling the Belgian equivalent of the AA they can't just fly you home cos your car is full of trees and plants and Lakeland goodies as well as small daughter and all the usual luggage?

Of course it has an efficient heater and a fan ... it just doesn't have air con ... that's different.

There’s some rain out there. Too dark to see, but I can see the pavement. Yippee!

It's all the same in our cars Dove.  You just tell it whether to be hot or cold or shut up.

I think they were on a jolly, Obxx. It was one of those huge lifeboats and everyone was in full uniform. I don't think they realised what difficulty we were in (though I suppose they should have), but yes, they were literally pointing and laughing. At that point neither did we - we were still at the attempting to row stage (which, if youre familiar with the current there, was futile). We knew we were taking on water though. It makes a good story, in hindsight (and ignoring what might have been) - there were other elements to it, including multiple copies of The Goblet of Fire, cameras, a bridegroom with a can of petrol, and us turning up to a wedding reception soaked through with sea water to find that most of the wedding party had been watching us from the hotel throughout... also laughing.

Sorry to hear how bad Wonky's heatstroke got. I've only had that once, many years ago, and it was horrible.

Now I feel even more virtuous ... I've summer pruned the espalier pear and the gooseberries ... I like doing the pear ... the gooseberries are like hard work ... bending down in the heat and getting very prickled and scratched ... but it's done and I'm indoors in the shade  with a cold orange juice ... it was cool this morning but there was a brisk breeze ... it's dropped now and it's feeling quite warm and sticky again out there.  But the canna is blooming  B)

@Hostafan1 - you're right, of course; pests and diseases come in by a lot of different routes, but that shouldn't, surely, be a reason not to be vigilant, and have rules to protect us as far as possible.  After all, the hated animal quarantine regs protected us in Britain from rabies, until a vaccine was developed.

@raisingirl - thank you.  My blueberries will be grateful.   :)

My equivalent of the rain dance (hanging out the towels) has had no effect... and it's too humid for the towels to have dried.  They'll smell nice though...

Having had a few days of much improved Internet, could even see photos on the forum, it's all gone wrong again. Lost it altogether yesterday evening and some of this afternoon. Phone has been almost unusable, it's so crackly. France Telecom say they are repairing damage after the storms.

Been to the hypermarket, spent a fortune on pool stuff, water still green and cloudy, fed up with it.

I hope Wonky is feeling better.
