Good morning. Our friends have taken Possum with them to O'Gliss for the day http://www.oglisspark.fr/ which suits me just fine. I've made a vanilla cream terrine for dessert this evening. Next job is peeling almonds for chicken with red peppers and almonds and then pickling the gherkins. Kitchen smells of cider vinegar being made smelly with garlic and mixed peppercorns so will need airing.
No hosepipe bans here but I suspect there aren't that many people round here who go round every day watering over a couple of hundred pots of roses, clematis, honeysuckle, hostas, Japanese maples, assorted shrubs, strawberries, citrus, lilies, babies being grown on........ and it's metered so we pay for it and don't waste it. Need to do that next as it didn't get done last night.
OH is trying to mend a hole in his waders so he can go in the pond and remove blanket weed. Not sure what all the wee frogs will think of that tho so I've asked him to do just the shallower half and leave the rest.
Narrow lanes round here too and some people aren't so clever at slowing down and pulling over when there's either a ditch or a bank at the side. Have to wonder how they manage other tricky things or do they just barge thru those too?

Playing Devil's Advocate here . Dutch elm disease arrived with a shipment of bananas. Do we quarantine all fruit and veg too?
Some countries do try, I think. But it's a balance of risk rather than trying to eliminate all risk, I suppose. Bringing in live plants is far more likely to introduce diseases. But diseases can get here without human help - insects and birds cross the Channel after all. We can't eliminate every route

The Pig's Nose Inn, excellent pub. The Salcombe garden is Overbeck's and well worth a visit. We walked round the coastal path to Salcombe from East Prawle, taking the little ferry into Salcombe. There is an NT carpark, free for members, near the ferry opposite Salcombe which might be useful for some folk.
There's an amazing National Trust garden in Salcombe too, sub-tropical plants and a beautiful Edwardian house. It's like a different world compared to the climate here.

Definitely cooler here today ... blue sky with big grey clouds ... don't suppose we'll get any rain tho'
Just spoke to Wonky ... the heat brought on a migraine and vomiting yesterday ... she's feeling a bit better but resting at home ... . She says thanks to you all for your kind wishes and she'll take up your kind offer of the loan of your refrigerated van please @Hostafan1

Poor Wonky but why haven't they got airco in their vans? They must be ancient!
I know the Pig's Nose. Just down the lane from my friend's holiday cottage tho now she's retired she spends half her time there and is in the Coastwatch at Prawle Point.
Yes Hosta - Oz controls what comes in to protect its environment - insecticides sprayed in aircraft before they let anyone out. Al food confiscated. Sniffer dogs in Customs and Immigration queues to sniff out sneaky apples and meats etc.
There was one very bad bout of Foot and mouth that was cuased by infected meat being brought in form India by someone whose mum thought he'd need feeding when he arrived in the UK. Just think how much pain and misery tat caused, let alone the financial costs. It's mad to risk raw or processed meat products across countries, let alone continents where there is no resistance to a new pest or virus or bacteria.
Same with plant hygiene and testing. There was a chap on Beechgrove the other week who suggested it was best not to move plants around too much, not even between England and Scotland cos of the risks. I'm just waiting for the price of olive oil to go thru the roof now that Italy is losing so many of its groves to this new disease from S. America. Just wait till it hits southern France and Spain and Greece!.
